Chapter 7 - The Reckoning of Adrian Hale

The transplant ICU on the 6th floor of St. Jude’s Hospital was quiet at midnight.
Claire’s condition had stabilized after the toxic drugs were flushed from her system, but her heart muscle remained critically damaged. She was living on borrowed time, hooked up to an intra-aortic balloon pump that helped her heart circulate blood.
Dr. Warren walked into the room, holding a digital tablet.
Adrian was sitting in his usual chair by the bed, reading a book aloud to Claire in a soft, low voice. Claire was awake, resting against three white pillows, her color slightly better than it had been three days ago.
"Mr. Hale, Claire," Dr. Warren said gently. "I have news."
Adrian stood up immediately, his heart pounding in his chest. "What is it, Doctor?"
"We just received an emergency alert from the Regional Organ Procurement Network," Dr. Warren said, a small, genuine smile touching her lips for the first time since they had met. "A matching donor heart has just become available in Boston. The tissue match is a nine out of ten."
Claire’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked at Adrian, her gray-green eyes wide with sudden fear and hope.
"A match?" Adrian whispered, his voice trembling.
"The medical transport team is dispatched," Dr. Warren said. "If we proceed, we will have her in Operating Room 3 by 4:00 AM. But I need to be completely honest with you both—this is a high-risk procedure. In Claire’s weakened state, the surgery carries significant mortality risks."
The room went completely still.
Claire looked down at her small hands, then turned her head toward Adrian.
"Adrian," she murmured softly.
He stepped to the side of her bed and took her hand, kneeling so he was eye-level with her. "I'm right here, sweetie."
"If... if I don't wake up," Claire whispered, tears welling in her eyes, "I want you to know something."
"Don't talk like that," Adrian begged, his voice cracking. "You're going to make it. You're strong, Claire. You've always been stronger than me."
"Listen to me," Claire insisted gently, squeezing his fingers with all her remaining strength. "I forgave you... the moment you sat on that kitchen floor and cried for me."
Adrian choked back a sob, pressing his forehead against her hand.

"I didn't keep that folder to destroy you, Adrian," Claire whispered softly, touching his dark hair. "I kept it because I knew the real man inside you was still there... under all that noise. I just wanted to make sure you found your way home."
"I found it, Claire," Adrian sobbed quietly, looking up into her beautiful, pale face. "I found it. And I'm never leaving again."
