Chapter 5 - The Toxic Trace

The morning light streamed softly through the blinds of Room 408 at St. Jude’s Hospital, casting warm, golden bars across the white sheets of Claire’s bed.
Adrian sat on a hard plastic chair beside her, holding her pale, limp hand in both of his. He hadn't slept in thirty-six hours. The stubble on his jaw had grown thick, and his dark eyes were heavy with exhaustion, but he refused to let go of her fingers.
The rhythmic beep... beep... beep... of the heart monitor was slightly more stable now, though still dangerously slow.
The door opened softly, and Dr. Melissa Warren walked in carrying a clipboard and a brown paper folder. Her face was unusually grim.
"Dr. Warren," Adrian said, standing up immediately. "How are her labs looking? Is there any change?"
Dr. Warren looked at Adrian, her usual harsh demeanor replaced by a look of deep, disturbing concern. "Mr. Hale... I need to show you something. We ran a full toxicology panel on Claire’s blood work when she was admitted night before last."
Adrian felt a sudden cold chill run down his spine. "Toxicology? Why?"
Dr. Warren opened the brown folder and handed him a lab report filled with complex chemical names and graph lines.
"Claire’s primary diagnosis is dilated cardiomyopathy," Dr. Warren explained, pointing a pen at a spike on the graph. "That condition is real, and her heart muscle is indeed severely weakened. However, the sudden, catastrophic collapse she suffered three nights ago was not a natural progression of her disease."
Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. "What are you saying?"
"We found high concentrations of Digoxin and Metoprolol inhibitors in her bloodstream," Dr. Warren said, her voice dropping into a low whisper. "She was prescribed standard beta-blockers for her heart. But the chemical levels in her system were nearly four times the maximum therapeutic threshold. Someone was altering her medication."
Adrian felt the room spin around him. The walls seemed to tilt.
"Altering her medication..." Adrian repeated, the words sounding unreal in his mouth. "She... she was being poisoned?"
"Not poisoned in the conventional sense," Dr. Warren corrected him sharply. "It was systematic pharmaceutical overdose. Given over weeks, it causes progressive fatigue, severe shortness of breath, confusion, and eventually, total cardiac arrest. To any outside doctor who didn't run a specialized mass-spectrometry panel, it would look like natural heart failure."
Adrian gripped the edge of the metal bed frame to steady himself. "Who gave her those prescriptions?"
"Claire filled her prescriptions at a small, independent pharmacy in Brooklyn near her apartment," Dr. Warren said. "A place called Apex Specialty Care."
Adrian’s mind raced through the files he had pulled from the kitchen vent.
Apex Specialty Care.
The name flashed in his memory like a neon sign. It was one of the subsidiary logistics companies listed in Claire’s accounting ledger—a shell company owned directly by a family member of Vanessa Cross.
The horror hit him with the force of a physical blow.
Vanessa hadn't just been waiting for Claire to die of her heart condition. She had been actively accelerating it. She wanted Claire dead before the Vanguard merger went through so that Claire’s stock rights would be buried forever in an estate battle, leaving Adrian completely isolated and easy to destroy.
And while Vanessa was slipping poison into Claire’s daily pills, Adrian had been standing beside her at the Fairmont Grand, laughing at her jokes and feeling ashamed of his wife.
Adrian dropped to his knees beside Claire’s bed, buried his face in the white cotton sheet, and wept.
He sobbed with a raw, agonizing grief that shook his entire body—crying for his arrogance, his stupidity, and the monstrous betrayal he had allowed to enter their lives.
A soft, faint movement touched his head.
Adrian froze.
A weak, trembling hand rested lightly against his dark hair.
He raised his head slowly.
Claire’s eyes were open.
They were unfocused, heavy with sedation, but she was looking directly down at him. The oxygen mask over her face fogged with her shallow, breathing.
"Adrian..." she whispered, her voice barely a breath against the plastic mask.
"Claire," Adrian choked out, taking her hand and pressing it against his wet cheek. "Claire, I’m here. I’m right here."
She looked at him for a long, quiet moment. She saw the bloodshot eyes, the ruined suit, the tears streaming down his face, and the absence of the arrogant mask he had worn for years.
"You found... the folder?" she whispered softly.
"I found it," Adrian said, his voice trembling violently. "I found everything. I stopped them, Claire. They’re gone. Vanessa and Marcus are under arrest. They will never touch you again."
Claire’s thumb moved weakly across his cheekbone, wiping away a tear.
"I wasn't... trying to ruin your party," she murmured softly, her eyes filling with tears. "I just... I wanted my husband back before... before I ran out of time."
Adrian leaned his forehead against her small hand, his heart breaking into a thousand jagged pieces.
"I'm here, baby," he sobbed, kissing her cold fingers over and over again. "I'm not going anywhere. I'm so sorry... I'm so, so sorry..."
May you like
Claire’s eyelids fluttered, heavy with exhaustion.
"Don't cry," she whispered, her voice fading back into sleep as the monitors hummed gently around them. "You always look... so handsome... when you smile."
