Chapter 6 - The Fall of Vanessa Cross

Three days later, the story broke across every major newspaper, business channel, and social media platform in the country.
“THE HALE EMPIRE COLLAPSE: CEO EXPOSES MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD AND ATTEMPTED MURDER IN BROOKLYN.”
The news stunned the financial world. The $600 million Vanguard deal was dead, Hale Urban Systems’ stock had been frozen by the SEC, and a team of federal prosecutors was systematically dismantling the corporate network built by Marcus Sterling and Vanessa Cross.
At 2:00 PM on a gray Thursday afternoon, the Federal Courthouse in Lower Manhattan was surrounded by hundreds of reporters, news vans, and flashing cameras.
Vanessa Cross was led out of the courthouse doors in orange prison scrubs, her hands cuffed at her waist and her feet shackled together. Her high-maintenance blonde hair was messy, her face was gaunt, and her eyes were filled with panicked exhaustion.
Standing on the courthouse steps, surrounded by a horde of journalists waving microphones, stood Adrian Hale.
He wore a dark coat, his face set in a calm, impenetrable stillness. Standing beside him was Dr. Melissa Warren and his chief legal representative.
"Mr. Hale! Over here! Did you know about the embezzlement scheme prior to this week?!" a reporter shouted.
"Mr. Hale! Is it true your wife was intentionally over-medicated by a pharmacy linked to Miss Cross?!" another voice yelled.
Adrian stepped up to the podium set up on the marble steps. He looked directly into the bank of camera lenses pointing at him.
"Six months ago," Adrian began, his voice deep, clear, and ringing out over the crowded plaza, "I believed that success was measured by net worth, valuation multiples, and the approval of people who didn't care if I lived or died."
The plaza grew quiet as his words echoed off the stone walls.
"I was wrong," Adrian continued, his eyes cold as steel. "I abandoned the person who built my life with me to chase a lie. And in doing so, I allowed corrupt, ruthless people to poison my company—and almost murder my wife."
He looked over his shoulder directly at Vanessa, who was being nudged into the back of a black federal van by two marshals. She caught his eye for a fraction of a second, her expression one of bitter, pathetic pleading.
Adrian turned back to the cameras.
"Today, I have formally resigned as CEO of Hale Urban Systems," Adrian announced.
A gasp went through the crowd of reporters.
"I have instructed the board to liquidate my entire equity holding—valued at approximately eighty million dollars," Adrian said calmly. "Every single dollar will be placed into an independent victim restitution fund, and into the construction of a state-of-the-art cardiac research facility at St. Jude’s Hospital, named in honor of Claire Hale."
He stepped back from the podium, ignoring the explosion of shouted questions from the press.
He walked down the marble steps, stepped into a waiting car, and told the driver to take him straight back to the hospital.

He didn't care about the news stories. He didn't care about the fallen stock prices or the destruction of his corporate reputation.
He had a higher battle to fight.
