Chapter 8 - The Gift of Tomorrow

Six months later.
Spring had arrived in New York. The gardens of the Moretti estate were in full bloom, filled with white roses, lavender, and sprawling green lawns.
Ethan sat on the terrace, healthy, vibrant, and laughing as he played video games on a portable console. His cheeks were full, his energy restored, and his blood work returned completely normal results every week. He was preparing to start his junior year at a prestigious private academy in Manhattan—fully funded by the Moretti Educational Foundation.
Inside the master suite, Cynthia stood in front of a full-length gilded mirror.
She wore a custom-designed off-the-shoulder wedding gown crafted from ivory Italian silk. The dress was sculpted to perfection, accentuating her voluptuous curves, featuring intricate lace detailing along the bodice and a dramatic train that swept gracefully behind her.
Her dark auburn hair fell in glossy waves over her shoulders, adorned with a delicate diamond tiara.
Cassie stood behind her, adjusting the veil with tears in her eyes.
"Cynthia," Cassie whispered, dabbing her eyes with a tissue. "You look like an absolute goddess. Seriously. If Dr. Vance could see you now, he’d drop dead instantly."
Cynthia laughed softly, looking at her reflection. For the first time in her life, she didn't see someone struggling under the weight of debt or insecurity. She saw a strong, radiant woman who was loved completely and unconditionally for exactly who she was.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Ethan walked in, looking sharp in a black tuxedo. He stopped in his tracks, his mouth agape.
"Wow, Cyn," Ethan said, his voice cracking slightly with emotion. "You... you look amazing."
Cynthia turned around, extending her arms to her little brother. Ethan walked over and hugged her tight, careful not to wrinkle the silk.
"Thank you for everything, Cyn," Ethan whispered into her shoulder. "For taking care of me when we had nothing. For fighting for me."
"I would do it a thousand times over, Ethan," Cynthia murmured, kissing his cheek. "Are you ready to walk me down the aisle?"
Ethan puffed out his chest proudly. "I’ve been ready for six months."
Down on the grand lawn, four hundred guests were seated beneath a massive white silk pavilion.
Arrayed in the front rows were the most powerful figures in the state—governors, business leaders, reformed syndicate heads, and the entire nursing staff from the St. Jude Outpatient Clinic, who had been invited as honored VIP guests.
At the altar, standing beneath an archway of white orchids and red roses, was Carter Moretti.
He looked impossibly handsome in a midnight-blue tuxedo, his grey eyes fixed steadily on the end of the aisle. Standing beside him as best man was Dominic.
The string quartet began to play a breathtaking rendition of Can't Help Falling in Love.
The crowd stood up in unison.
Ethan guided Cynthia down the white carpet.
When Carter’s eyes caught sight of his bride, the formidable, untouchable Don of New York froze. A soft, breathless gasp escaped his lips, his dark eyes instantly shining with unbidden tears of pure reverence and love.
He stepped down from the altar platform, meeting Ethan and Cynthia halfway.
Ethan took Cynthia’s hand, placing it gently into Carter’s large, strong palm.
"Take care of my sister, Don Moretti," Ethan said clearly.
"With my life," Carter swore, his voice resonant and deep.
Carter led Cynthia up to the altar. He lifted her veil, his fingers lightly stroking her cheek as he leaned down to whisper into her ear.
"You are the most breathtaking sight I have ever seen in my life, my love," he whispered.
Cynthia beamed, her hazel eyes sparkling. "You don't look so bad yourself, Don Moretti."
The archbishop began the ceremony.
"Do you, Carter Moretti, take Cynthia Quinn to be your wedded wife, to love, honor, and protect, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, until death do you part?"
Carter looked deep into Cynthia’s eyes, holding her hands tightly. "I do. With every breath in my body, every beat of my heart, and every day of my life."
"And do you, Cynthia Quinn, take Carter Moretti to be your wedded husband?"
Cynthia felt her heart soar into the heavens. "I do."
"By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride!"
May you like
Carter didn't hesitate. He pulled Cynthia flush against his body, dipping her back slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate, sweeping kiss that echoed with absolute victory and devotion.
The entire crowd erupted into thunderous applause, cheers, and standing ovations!
