Chapter 3 - The Claim Before Everyone

The Intensive Care Unit on the eighth floor of St. Jude Central Hospital was locked down tighter than a federal prison.

Armored men in black suits stood at five-foot intervals along the corridor. No staff member entered or left without passing through a metal detector and having their credentials manually verified by Dominic.

Inside Room 804, the rhythmic beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor was the only sound breaking the silence.

Cynthia slowly dragged herself out of the heavy fog of anesthesia. Her throat felt like sandpaper, and every nerve in her upper body burned with a dull, throbbing ache. Heavy bandages bound her shoulder, her flank, and her hip.

She blinked against the harsh sunlight streaming through the window.

Standing at the foot of her bed was Dr. Preston Vance, flanked by the hospital's Chief Administrative Officer, Arthur Sterling, and two legal representatives from the hospital's risk management team.

"...the narrative must remain contained," Sterling was saying softly to Vance, unaware that Cynthia’s eyes had opened. "If news leaks that a nurse was shot protecting a high-profile figure inside an outpatient clinic, our liability insurance will be canceled by midnight. We present it as a tragic workplace accident involving stray gunfire."

Vance nodded quickly, adjusting his tie. "Agreed. And regarding Quinn... she was out of her designated area during the incident. Technically, her stepping out into the hallway violated safety protocol. That gives us leverage on the worker's comp claim."

Cynthia’s chest tightened painfully. Even after taking three bullets, they were already preparing to deny her insurance coverage to protect their own bottom line. If they denied the claim, her employment would be terminated, Ethan’s health insurance would vanish, and the $61,300 debt would crush them completely.

She tried to speak, but only a raspy cough escaped her lips.

Vance turned, noticing she was awake. He put on a practiced, insincere smile and stepped to the side of her bed.

"Ah, Nurse Quinn. You're awake. You gave us quite a scare." Vance cleared his throat, leaning in slightly. "Now, regarding the statement you’ll be signing for the board... we need you to acknowledge that you acted outside standard emergency procedures—"

"She won't be signing anything of the sort."

The heavy wooden door of the ICU room swung open with explosive force.

Carter Moretti walked in.

He was no longer wearing the worn leather-strapped watch or the simple jacket of his clinic visits. He wore a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, a crisp white shirt open at the collar, and an air of absolute, terrifying authority. Behind him walked two lawyers holding leather briefcases, followed by four armed bodyguards.

Vance gasped, stepping back. "Don Moretti... this is a restricted medical area—"

"This entire hospital belongs to me as of twenty minutes ago," Carter said flatly.

He didn't raise his voice, but the weight of his words shattered the air in the room. He walked past Vance as if the doctor were invisible, stepping directly to Cynthia’s bedside.

The coldness in his grey eyes melted completely as he looked down at her pale face. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently covering her trembling fingers.

"How is the pain?" he asked softly.

"I... I can manage," Cynthia rasped, her hazel eyes searching his face. "Ethan... where is my brother?"

"Ethan is on the ninth floor in the private pediatric nephrology suite," Carter replied gently, leaning down so only she could hear. "He has his own dedicated team of specialists. His medical debt has been paid in full. His dialysis is taken care of for the rest of his life."

Tears sprang to Cynthia’s eyes. "Carter... you didn't have to..."

"I do have to," Carter said smoothly.

He turned slowly to face Vance, Sterling, and the legal team. The gentleness vanished instantly, replaced by the lethal strike of a predator.

"I overheard your conversation," Carter said, walking slowly toward Sterling. "You were discussing leverage. You were discussing denying insurance to a woman who took three rounds meant for me."

Sterling’s face turned gray. "Don Moretti, you misunderstand! We were simply reviewing administrative policy—"

"Administrative policy is dead," Carter growled. He tapped a finger against Sterling’s chest. "As the new majority shareholder of St. Jude Health System, my first administrative action is the immediate termination of your contract. Yours, Sterling. And yours, Vance."

Vance’s mouth opened in horror. "You can't fire me! I am the head of internal medicine!"

"You were," Carter corrected coldly. "Now you are unemployed. And by four o'clock today, the state medical board will receive a file detailing your history of falsifying charts, verbal abuse of staff, and kickback schemes with pharmaceutical vendors."

Vance staggered back against the wall, his career ruined in a single sentence.

Carter turned back to Cynthia, taking her hand once more. He looked around the room, ensuring every guard, every administrator, and every remaining nurse in the hallway heard every word.

"Let me make something clear to everyone in this facility," Carter announced, his voice reverberating through the suite. "Cynthia Quinn is no longer an employee of this hospital. She is under the personal protection of the Moretti family."

He leaned down, lifting her bruised hand to his lips, pressing a firm, lingering kiss against her knuckles.

"She took three bullets for me," Carter said, his eyes burning into Cynthia’s soul. "And from this moment on, anyone who disrespects her, hurts her, or even looks at her with anything less than absolute reverence will answer directly to me. She is mine."
