Chapter 5 - The Weight of Protection

The atmosphere in the grand dining hall of the Moretti estate was tense.
Outside, rain lashed against the tall stained-glass windows, matching the storm brewing within the underworld. Carter sat at the head of a massive mahogany table, flanked by his seven highest-ranking captains.
Cynthia stood near the doorway, leaning slightly on a wooden cane that the physical therapist had provided. She was dressed in a dark burgundy wool dress that hugged her curves gracefully, her dark hair pinned back. She had tried to stay upstairs, but Carter had explicitly requested her presence.
"Valenti is moving three shipments of illegal arms through Pier 42 tonight," Dominic was reporting, tapping a map displayed on a digital screen. "He’s using the rumor that Don Moretti was injured at the clinic to rally the smaller families against us. He thinks the Don is distracted."
One of the older captains, a scarred man named Bruno, cleared his throat loudly. He cast a sharp, disapproving glance toward Cynthia.
"With all due respect, Boss," Bruno grunted, leaning forward. "Valenti isn't entirely wrong. You brought a civilian into the compound. You bought a hospital. You spent ten million dollars on private medical teams for her kid brother. The other families think you’re losing your edge over a girl."
The air in the room instantly turned to sub-zero temperatures.
Carter didn't slam his hand on the table. He didn't shout. He simply rested his hands flat on the polished mahogany, turning his head slowly to look at Bruno.
"Repeat what you just said, Bruno," Carter requested softly.
Bruno swallowed hard, suddenly realizing he had crossed an invisible boundary. "I... I only mean that family business should remain family business, Don Moretti."
"Cynthia IS family," Carter’s voice cracked like thunder through the hall.
He stood up, towering over the table. The authority radiating from him was so heavy that even the hardened captains shifted uncomfortably in their seats.
"Cynthia Quinn did what none of you were fast enough to do," Carter said, his cold grey eyes sweeping over every captain in the room. "She stood between me and a bullet without hesitation. She showed more loyalty in three seconds than half the men in this city show in a lifetime."
He walked over to Cynthia, taking her hand gently in his, pulling her forward to stand beside his chair at the head of the table.
"If any man in this room, or any man in New York, believes that loving this woman makes me weak," Carter declared, his eyes flashing with lethal promise, "let him step forward tonight. I will personally show him how wrong he is."
Silence descended upon the room. Bruno bowed his head quickly. "Forgive me, Don Moretti. My tongue was careless."
"See that it doesn't happen again," Carter said flatly. He turned to Dominic. "Set the trap at Pier 42. We let Valenti think his raid is going according to plan. Then we crush him."
"Yes, Boss!" the captains responded in unison.
Later that evening, after the captains had departed to execute their orders, Cynthia sat with Carter on the terrace under the heated awning.
"You didn't have to defend me like that," Cynthia said softly, watching the rain fall over the gardens. "They were right to be concerned. My presence has put a target on your back."
Carter turned to her, reaching out to gently cup her face in his broad palm. His thumb brushed over her cheekbone with infinite tenderness.
"You didn't put a target on my back, Cynthia," Carter whispered. "You gave me something worth living for. For fifteen years, I ran this family out of duty and bloodline. Now, I run it to keep you safe."
Cynthia leaned into his touch, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep and overwhelming it took her breath away. She had spent her entire life being overlooked, criticized for her weight, and treated as an disposable worker.
Yet here, in the arms of the most feared man in New York, she was worshiped.
"Carter..." she murmured, reaching up to wrap her arms around his neck.
He pulled her close, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of rain, fire, and absolute possession. Cynthia melted against him, her fingers tangling in his dark hair as he lifted her gently, holding her tight against his chest as if she were the most precious treasure in the world.
"Mommy... I mean, Cynthia?"
A small voice interrupted them.

They pulled back to see Ethan standing in the doorway of the terrace, holding a bowl of popcorn, looking slightly embarrassed.
"Sorry to break up the movie moment," Ethan grinned, "but the transplant coordinator just called the house line. They found a match."
