Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Empire

The year following the trial was the most transformative of my life.
With Daniel permanently removed from my world, Vanguard Global flourished. Under my leadership, and with Ethan’s strategic partnership, we expanded into international markets, doubling the company's valuation.
I was featured on the cover of Forbes magazine. The headline read: The Iron Queen of Logistics: How Emily Carter Reclaimed Her Throne.
But the greatest victory wasn't financial. It was personal.
My relationship with Ethan blossomed into a profound, healthy, and deeply passionate love. He was everything Daniel was not. Ethan communicated, he supported me, and he celebrated my victories as if they were his own.
One evening, Ethan invited me to his private estate overlooking the ocean.
The patio was lit with hundreds of candles, and a private chef had prepared my favorite meal. My hair had grown out into a sleek, stylish bob, framing my face perfectly. I wore an emerald green silk dress that made me feel like royalty.
After dinner, Ethan poured us two glasses of vintage champagne. We walked to the edge of the balcony, listening to the crashing waves below.
“I was reading the latest quarterly reports today,” Ethan smiled, wrapping his strong arms around my waist from behind. “Vanguard just outpaced our biggest competitor. You’re unstoppable, Emily.”
I leaned back against his chest, feeling perfectly safe. “I couldn't have done the merger without you, Ethan.”
“You would have figured it out,” Ethan kissed the side of my neck softly. “You are the strongest woman I’ve ever met. From the moment I saw you in that boardroom, with your shaved head and your absolute fearlessness... I knew you were the woman I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.”
My breath caught in my throat.
Ethan stepped back. I turned around to find him lowering himself onto one knee. He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket, opening it to reveal a breathtaking, flawless radiant-cut diamond ring.
“Emily,” Ethan said, his eyes filled with profound emotion. “You took the worst day of your life and turned it into an empire. Now, I want to spend every day of my life making sure you are loved, cherished, and protected. Will you marry me?”
Tears—happy, healing tears—finally spilled over my eyelashes.

I didn't hesitate.
“Yes,” I whispered, pulling him up into a passionate kiss. “Yes, Ethan. Absolutely yes.”
