Chapter 4 - The Legal Guillotine

The next morning, the corporate world woke up to a seismic shock.
The financial news networks were buzzing with the sudden, brutal ousting of Daniel Carter. But while the business world was focused on the money, I was focused on justice.
I sat in the precinct of the local police department, accompanied by Marcus. Sitting across from us was Detective Reynolds, a seasoned investigator with sharp eyes.
On the table between us were high-definition photographs of my ruined hair, the deep scratches on my neck from where Vanessa had grabbed me, and the statement from the office security guard who had broken up the attack.
“She used a pair of stainless steel fabric scissors from the mailroom,” I explained to the detective. “She cornered me in the restroom, pinned me against the marble counter, and hacked my hair off while telling me I was a pathetic, washed-up wife.”
Detective Reynolds grimaced, looking at the photos. “And your husband? Did he intervene?”
“He walked in right after,” I said, my voice hardening. “He saw what she did. He told the security guard not to call the police, claiming it was a 'catfight' that got out of hand. He aided her in covering up a violent assault.”
Marcus handed a flash drive to the detective. “We also have the security footage from the hallway. It clearly shows Ms. Brooks entering the restroom with a sharp object, and Mr. Carter dismissing the security team afterward to protect his mistress.”
Detective Reynolds closed the file. “Assault with a deadly weapon. Unlawful imprisonment. And accessory after the fact for the husband. I’m issuing arrest warrants for both of them right now.”
While the police mobilized, I went to my next appointment.
I drove to the most exclusive, high-end salon in the city. The head stylist, a man named Julian, gasped when I took off my silk scarf.
“Darling... who did this to you?” he asked gently.
“Someone who thought a woman’s power is only in her appearance,” I said, looking at my jagged reflection. “Cut it all off, Julian. All of it.”
Julian didn't ask questions. He picked up his clippers.
Thirty minutes later, I looked in the mirror, and a stranger stared back at me. But for the first time in years, I loved the stranger I saw.
My head was shaved into a fierce, elegant, platinum blonde pixie buzzcut. It highlighted my cheekbones, my jawline, and my eyes. I didn't look like a gentle, accommodating housewife anymore.
I looked like a CEO. I looked like a warrior.
I put on a tailored, crimson red power suit, paid Julian double his rate, and walked out into the sunlight.
As I got into my car, my phone buzzed. It was a news alert from a local crime blog.
