Chapter 5 - Bow to Your Chairman

The Senior Director turned his cold gaze toward Celeste Harrington.

"Mrs. Armitage has held a courtesy seat on the secondary advisory panel," the director stated smoothly. "She holds zero voting shares in Armitage Global. Sixty-five percent of all voting stock, property deeds, and international assets are held directly by Julian Armitage under the primary trust established by his late grandfather."

The silence in the hallway was so absolute you could hear the hum of the fluorescent lights.

Evelyn's face turned from pale to gray. "Julian... you... you put those shares in a blind trust six years ago. You stepped away!"

"I stepped away from the city because I wanted to live like a human being," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying baritone. "I stepped away because I hated the arrogance, the cruelty, and the rot that lived inside Armitage House. I gave you that mansion. I gave you your allowance. I gave you your jewels and your teas and your fake social standing so you would leave me alone."

He stepped closer to Evelyn. Every step he took forced his mother back until her knees hit the velvet armchair.

"I let you believe I was jobless," Julian whispered, leaning down until he was inches from her face. "I let you believe Clara married a poor man because I wanted her to love me for me. Not for my money. Not for my name. And she did. She loved me in a worn sweater. She loved me when we cooked dinner on a stove that barely worked. She gave me more warmth in two years than you gave me in thirty."

Evelyn swallowed hard, her hand clutching her pearls. "Julian... I am your mother. You cannot talk to me like this in front of these people—"

"You are not my mother," Julian said.

The words fell like heavy stones.

"A mother does not look at a pregnant woman with disgust," Julian continued, his eyes burning with pure hatred. "A mother does not call a child a burden. And a mother..."

He reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a sleek, black glass tablet.

He tapped the screen.

A high-definition video began to play. The audio rang out through the speakers, crystal clear, unedited, amplified by the high-end technology of his private security team.

The video showed the top of the grand staircase at Armitage House.

It showed me, pregnant, slow, holding my back, walking carefully toward the stairs.

It showed Evelyn stepping out from the drawing room. Silent. Deliberate.

It showed her standing behind me.

It showed her placing both hands flat against my back.

May you like

It showed her shoving me with cold, calculated force.

And then, clear as a bell, the video played the sound that had haunted my dreams since that morning: Evelyn Armitage’s soft, amused laugh as I fell.
