Chapter 3 - The Poisoned Gathering

By eight o'clock that evening, the executive floor of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital had been transformed into a private waiting lounge for the city’s high society.
Evelyn had invited them all.
Celeste Harrington sat on a velvet armchair in the private VIP hallway, wearing a pale gray coat that matched her diamond earrings. Her father was the chairman of Harrington Capital, the firm Evelyn had spent three years trying to merge with the Armitage estate. Beside them sat two city council members, a senior partner from the city’s largest law firm, and the hospital’s chief administrator, Dr. Harrison.
Evelyn sat at the center of it all, holding a porcelain cup of tea, looking like a mother bearing an unbearable tragedy with stoic nobility.
"It is just heartbreaking," Celeste murmured, dabbing at the corner of her eyes with a lace handkerchief. "Julian was always so sweet. To think he tied himself to someone so... unstable."
"She was prone to fainting, you know," Evelyn said softly, her voice carrying across the quiet corridor. "I told Julian months ago that the girl's health was fragile. Her mother has a history of nervous afflictions. I begged her to stay on the ground floor today, but she insisted on carrying those heavy books up to the library. She tripped over her own feet."
Dr. Harrison nodded in deep understanding. "Hormonal imbalances in the ninth month can cause severe vertigo, Mrs. Armitage. The medical report will reflect a tragic accidental slip. You shouldn't blame yourself."
"I only care about my son," Evelyn sighed, placing her tea down with a delicate clink. "Julian has been under so much stress. Living in that tiny cottage, trying to manage his little 'consulting' projects while nursing a wife who could barely navigate a staircase. When he arrives tonight, we must surround him with real family. Real support."
Celeste reached out, covering Evelyn's hand. "Father and I are prepared to announce the joint venture as soon as Julian takes his proper seat on your family board, Evelyn. It's time he put this unfortunate chapter behind him."
I heard every word.
My room was only ten feet away, the door cracked open just enough for the sound of their soft, civilized cruelty to drift inside. I lay in the dark, clutching my stomach, listening to them erase my life, my baby's existence, and my marriage into a "tragic mistake."
They talked about my son as if he were already gone.
They talked about Julian as if he were a lost child returning to his cage.
"Where is Julian anyway?" Celeste asked, adjusting her ring. "He should have been here an hour ago."
"He was finalizing some paperwork at his office," Evelyn said smoothly, though a flicker of annoyance crossed her face. "He doesn't like hospital crowds. But he will be here soon. And when he comes, he will see who truly stands by him."
Suddenly, the air in the corridor seemed to shift.
It wasn't a sound at first. It was a feeling—a sudden drop in temperature, a heavy pressure that made the hospital staff stop in their tracks down the hall.

Far down the corridor, the heavy double doors of the VIP wing burst open.
The sound did not come from a doctor or a nurse. It came from boots. Heavy, polished, synchronized footsteps that echoed off the marble floor like a drumbeat.
