Chapter 4 - The Arrest of Taylor Bennett

The next morning at 7:30 AM, Taylor Bennett pulled his luxury German sedan into the driveway of his Aspen Ridge home. He was sipping a coffee, completely unaware of what had transpired overnight.

He thought his mother was inside making breakfast. He thought I was still weak, broken, and isolated.

As Taylor stepped out of his car, two unmarked black SUVs and three Colorado Springs police vehicles slammed their brakes in the street, blocking his driveway entirely.

Four police officers and two Military Police investigators stepped out, weapons drawn.

“Taylor Bennett!” Captain Miller shouted over a loudspeaker. “Stay where you are and place your hands on your head!”

Taylor froze, dropping his coffee cup onto the pavement. “What is the meaning of this?! I am a high-ranking county employee! Get off my property!”

I stepped out from the passenger side of Captain Miller’s SUV, wearing my full Army Service Uniform—my brass eagles shining on my collar, my chest covered in ribbons from two decades of honorable service.

Taylor’s face drained of all color when he saw me.

“Sarah...?” Taylor stammered, taking a step back. “What... what are you doing here? Where is my mother?”

“Your mother is currently sitting in a county holding cell on a one-million-dollar bond, Taylor,” I said, walking toward him with slow, deliberate steps.

“What? That’s insane!” Taylor yelled, trying to regain his arrogant posture. “If this is about yesterday, Evelyn was just disciplining Lily! You’re overreacting like you always do! You’re crazy, Sarah! Your military combat stress has made you paranoid!”

Captain Miller stepped up beside me, pulling a crisp, stamped federal warrant from his jacket.

“Mr. Bennett, we have recovered forty-eight separate video files from your home cloud server,” Captain Miller announced loudly, ensuring the neighbors who had gathered on their lawns heard every word. “The footage clearly shows you aiding and abetting your mother in locking your seven-year-old daughter in a sub-zero freezer on multiple occasions over the past eight months.”

The neighbors on the street gasped. Whispers flooded the sidewalk.

“No... wait!” Taylor panicked, his eyes darting wildly toward his car. “That footage is private! You didn't have a warrant!”

“Emergency exigent circumstances involving the torture of a minor, Mr. Bennett,” Captain Miller replied coldly. “Turn around.”

Two MP officers grabbed Taylor’s arms, forcing him down onto the hood of his own car. Steel handcuffs snapped tightly around his wrists.

“Sarah! Tell them to stop!” Taylor shrieked, his forehead pressed against the hot metal of his sedan. “You’re ruining my career! You’re ruining my life! I’m her father!”

I leaned down until my face was inches from his ear.

“You lost the right to call yourself her father the second you closed that freezer lid, Taylor,” I whispered. “You thought I was just your quiet, obedient ex-wife who would walk away into the night. You forgot who I am.”

As they loaded Taylor into the back of the police van, I didn't watch him leave. I turned around, got back into the SUV, and headed straight back to the hospital to be where I belonged: beside my daughter.
