Chapter 2 - Confrontation in the Cold

The footsteps stopped right at the threshold of the garage.

Evelyn Bennett stepped into the dim light. She was dressed in an expensive cashmere sweater, her pearl necklace catching the glare of the overhead bulb, holding a sleeve of paper cups and a thermos.

When her eyes landed on me standing over Lily—who was wrapped tightly in my heavy military parka, shivering uncontrollably—Evelyn didn't gasp. She didn't look shocked.

She simply blinked, narrowed her eyes, and set the thermos down on the workbench.

“Sarah,” Evelyn said, her voice entirely devoid of panic. “What are you doing here? Taylor told you to pick up your boxes tomorrow.”

I didn't move an inch. My body was locked in a combat stance I hadn't used since my last deployment to Iraq. Every nerve ending in my body was firing red-hot, but my military training kept my hands still and my breath measured.

“She was inside the freezer, Evelyn,” I said. My voice was a low, terrifying growl.

Evelyn let out a soft, dismissive sigh, crossing her arms over her chest. “Oh, don't be so dramatic. She was throwing a temper tantrum because I wouldn't let her watch television. I put her in there for five minutes to cool off and learn some discipline. It builds character.”

Lily shrank behind my legs, clutching the fabric of my army trousers so hard her little knuckles turned white.

“Five minutes?” I took a step toward Evelyn. The temperature in the room plummeted. “Her lips are blue, Evelyn. Her hoodie is covered in frost. And there are fingernail scratches on the inside of the lid.”

For a split second, a flicker of annoyance crossed Evelyn’s face, but she quickly smoothed her expression into one of cold superiority.

“She is my granddaughter, Sarah. While you were off playing soldier for the last twenty years, I was the one maintaining this family. You don't know how to raise a child. You’re never here. Taylor and I decided that a firm hand was necessary.”

“Taylor knew?” I asked, my heart pounding against my ribs like a sledgehammer.

Evelyn sneered. “Of course Taylor knew. Who do you think bought the freezer locks? Taylor agrees with me. You’ve spoiled the girl with your soft, bleeding-heart nonsense.”

Before Evelyn could take another breath, the loud, wailing red-and-blue strobe lights of three Colorado Springs police cruisers flashed through the open garage door, illuminating the driveway in neon light.

Tires screeched on the asphalt.

Evelyn’s composure finally cracked. Her jaw dropped as four uniformed officers and two paramedics rushed into the garage, weapons unholstered, eyes wide as they swept the room.

“Police! Nobody move!” Officer Vance yelled, his sidearm lowered but ready.

Evelyn whipped around, staring at the officers, then back at me in disbelief. “You called the police?! Into my son’s home?!”

“Officer,” I said clearly, my military bearing taking command of the room. “I am Colonel Sarah Bennett. My seven-year-old daughter was locked inside that commercial chest freezer by this woman. The child has severe hypothermia.”

The paramedics didn't wait. They rushed past Evelyn with a heated blanket and an emergency thermal wrap.

Officer Vance stepped up to the chest freezer, looked inside at the frost-covered interior, and ran his gloved flashlight along the deep, desperate scratches carved into the inner lining near the latch. His face went pale with horror.

“Ma'am,” Officer Vance said, turning to Evelyn, his voice dropping into absolute disgust. “Put your hands behind your back.”

“How dare you!” Evelyn shrieked, backing away. “Do you know who my son is?! He is a Senior Financial Analyst for the county! I am Evelyn Bennett! You can't touch me!”

Officer Vance grabbed Evelyn’s wrist, twisted it cleanly behind her back, and snapped a cold steel handcuff into place.

“Evelyn Bennett, you are under arrest for attempted murder, felony child abuse, and unlawful imprisonment.”

As they dragged Evelyn screaming into the back of a police cruiser, I knelt beside Lily on the concrete floor while the paramedics wrapped her in warming pads.

Lily looked up at me with terrified eyes. “Mommy... is Grandma going to be mad at me?”

I kissed her frozen forehead, tears finally breaking through my military composure. “Grandma is never going to hurt you again, baby. I promise you. Never again.”
