Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Chord

Six months later, the Moretti estate looked entirely different.

The gardens were filled with bright summer flowers instead of grim security patrols. The sound of laughter—actual, genuine laughter—echoed from the rear courtyard where Vance and a few off-duty guards were tossing a baseball with Leo.

Inside the east parlor, the afternoon sun cast a golden glow across the polished floor.

Clara sat on the piano bench in a flowing sapphire-blue dress that caught the light like water.

Beside her sat Leo, now nine years old, wearing a crisp white shirt with his noise-canceling headphones resting comfortably around his neck. His fingers hovered over the ivory keys, perfectly poised.

“Ready, Leo?” Clara asked, smiling.

“Ready,” Leo said clearly.

Together, they began to play.

It wasn’t a simple children’s tune. It was a complex, beautiful, cascading composition of their own creation—part classical waltz, part gentle storm, filled with rhythm, harmony, and absolute freedom.

Standing near the open double doors, leaning against the marble frame with a glass of scotch in his hand, Dante Moretti watched them.

He didn’t look like a feared mafia boss who controlled the docks of New York. He looked like a man who had fought through the dark, braved the storm, and finally found the melody he had been missing his entire life.

As the final, resonant chord faded into the warm summer air, Leo turned to Clara, pointed at the blue fabric of her sleeve, and smiled.

“Good song,” Leo said.

“The best kind of song,” Clara replied, resting her hand gently on his shoulder.

Across the room, Dante raised his glass to them both, his eyes shining with a quiet, unbroken pride. The music in the house would never stop again.
