Chapter 9 - The Trial and the Settlement

Two weeks after the attack, the war for New York’s underworld reached its definitive conclusion.

Sal Marcone’s headquarters in Brooklyn was raided by federal authorities acting on an anonymous, highly detailed tip containing wiretaps, financial ledgers, and shipping manifests—all conveniently dropped on the steps of the FBI’s Manhattan field office with Dante Moretti’s silent blessing.

Marcone was arrested before he could flee to South America. His capos either went underground or swore fealty to the Moretti family, establishing a permanent, unbreakable peace across the docks.

Inside the Staten Island estate, life resumed with a new kind of warmth.

The guards were still stationed at the gates, but the heavy iron doors were no longer locked during the day. Sunlight poured unhindered through the tall parlor windows, illuminating the gleaming black finish of the Bösendorfer.

One Tuesday morning, Clara sat at her apartment in Queens, packing her small canvas bag, when a gentle knock sounded at her front door.

She opened it to find Dante standing on the cracked front steps. He wore a tailored gray suit without a tie, looking like a magazine cover against the dreary Queens background.

“What are you doing here?” Clara smiled, leaning against the doorframe. “You have an entire army of drivers.”

“I wanted to pick you up myself,” Dante said, stepping inside and looking around the modest living room. “Besides, I have a delivery for your sister.”

From behind Dante stepped a young, professional-looking woman carrying a sleek, modern medical tablet and a large folder.

“Clara,” Mia called out, walking out of her bedroom looking healthier and stronger than she had in two years. “You won't believe this. Dr. Vance—the kidney specialist from St. Jude’s—just called. He said my insurance tier was upgraded, and all upcoming treatments are fully covered under a permanent endowment grant.”

Clara froze. She turned her gaze slowly from her sister to Dante.

“You didn't have to do that,” Clara whispered, her throat tightening with emotion.

“I didn’t buy her health, Clara,” Dante said softly, stepping closer and taking her hands in his. “I invested in my family. And your sister is part of that family now—whether you like it or not.”

Clara looked up into his frozen-lake eyes, seeing the fierce, unyielding devotion hidden beneath the mobster exterior.

“Pack your bags, Clara Bennett,” Dante murmured, pressing a warm kiss to her knuckles. “Leo is waiting at the piano, and he wants to play a duet with the piano lady.”
