Chapter 6 - The Trap of the Langston Dynasty

The thirty-eighth-floor living room was bathed in the harsh, flashing blue and red neon lights of the Chicago skyline.

Shards of reinforced glass covered the Persian rug. A heavy steel-tipped crossbow bolt was embedded deep into the oak paneling above the fireplace, still vibrating from the impact.

Dante materialized from the hallway shadow, his gun drawn, wearing a tactical headset.

“Sniper from the adjacent commercial tower,” Dante reported rapidly, his voice clipped. “We’ve already deployed a counter-assault team to the roof opposite. It’s a professional hit, Boss. Langston’s final desperate move.”

Daniel stared at the crossbow bolt, his face carved from ice.

“Charles is getting sloppy,” Daniel said coldly. “Sending a sniper through three-hundred yards of open Chicago wind means he’s panicking. He knows his financial empire is gone.”

“Do we strike back tonight?” Dante asked.

“No,” Daniel replied, shaking his head slowly as a dark, calculated plan formed in his mind. “Let him think he almost got me. Let him grow arrogant. When a cornered animal tries to bite, you don't shoot it immediately—you let it walk right into the trap.”

Daniel turned back toward the guest suite corridor. His primary concern wasn't the sniper; it was Maria and Sofia.

He walked back down the hallway, tapping the private security code into the biometric lock of the guest suite.

The door clicked open.

Maria was standing in the center of the room, clutching a trembling Sofia in her arms. Her face was pale, her dark eyes wide with terror.

“Was that... was that a gunshot?” Maria asked, her voice shaking uncontrollably. “Are we safe?”

Daniel crossed the room in two strides. He didn't just stand near her this time; he reached out, pulling both Maria and the sleeping child into the solid, unyielding shelter of his arms.

Maria gasped softly against his chest, burying her face in the fabric of his shirt, letting the overwhelming warmth and strength of his embrace anchor her against the panic.

“You are safe,” Daniel murmured, pressing his lips gently against the top of Maria’s dark hair. “I swear to you, Maria, nobody will ever lay a hand on you or your daughter as long as I’m breathing.”

“They tried to hurt you,” Maria whispered, her hands gripping the lapels of his shirt. “Because of us... because of what happened at the gala.”

“They tried to hurt me because they don't understand what belongs to me,” Daniel corrected softly, pulling back just enough to look deep into her eyes.

Maria’s breath hitched. Belongs to me.

It wasn't a claim of ownership born of arrogance; it was the absolute vow of a protector who had finally found the one thing in his vast, cold empire worth fighting to the death for.

“Tomorrow,” Daniel continued, his slate-gray eyes burning with resolve, “this game ends. Charles Langston is going to learn why they call me the Wolf of Chicago.”
