Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The penthouse apartment on the thirty-eighth floor of the Mercer Tower was enveloped in a deep, protective quiet.

The second-floor master guest suite had been transformed into a haven for Maria and Sofia. The walls were painted a soft, calming cream, a plush white rug covered the hardwood floors, and a brand-new toddler bed sat piled high with stuffed animals and storybooks.

Maria sat on the edge of the large queen-sized bed, watching Sofia sleep peacefully under a duvet.

Her mind was spinning.

Just twenty-four hours ago, she was a terrified cleaning woman hiding her child in a staff closet. Now, she was living in a luxury suite inside the most heavily guarded fortress in Chicago, protected by a billionaire mafia king who had just waged financial war against one of the city’s oldest families on her behalf.

Knock. Knock.

The door to the suite opened gently.

Daniel stood in the doorway. He had removed his tuxedo jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing strong, corded forearms. He looked tired, the hard lines of his face softening slightly as he looked into the dimly lit room.

“Is she asleep?” Daniel asked quietly, stepping inside with silent, barefoot grace.

“Yes,” Maria whispered, standing up slowly and smoothing down her simple black trousers. “She exhausted herself playing with the new blocks you had delivered. Mr. Mercer... I don't know how to thank you. Or how to process any of this.”

Daniel walked over, stopping just a few feet away from her. The height difference between them was staggering, making Maria feel both entirely safe and intensely aware of his overwhelming masculinity.

“Call me Daniel, Maria,” he said, his voice a low rumble. “And you don't need to thank me for doing what should have been done the moment Victoria opened her mouth.”

“You ruined the Langston alliance,” Maria said, her voice filled with anxious concern. “Charles Langston is a dangerous man. People in the city say he’s tied to the old syndicate families. What if he retaliates against you?”

A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of Daniel’s lips.

“Charles Langston is a ghost fighting a war that ended ten years ago,” Daniel replied calmly. “He thinks he owns Chicago because of his last name. He forgot that the city belongs to whoever holds the actual power.”

He took a step closer, his slate-gray eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made Maria’s pulse spike.

“My primary concern isn't Charles Langston, Maria,” Daniel murmured, his voice dropping an octave. “It’s making sure you and Sofia are safe under my roof.”

Maria looked up into his eyes, seeing a profound loneliness hidden beneath the armor of the billionaire king. For seven years, she had watched him from the shadows—a distant, untouchable god walking through the halls of his estate. Now, he was standing right in front of her, offering her his protection, his home, and his heart.

“Why?” Maria whispered, her voice barely audible. “Why do this for me? I’m just... I’m nobody.”

Daniel reached out.

His large, calloused hand—warm and steady—lifted, his fingers gently brushing against her cheek, tracing the curve of her jawline with a tenderness that defied every rumor told about the Wolf of Chicago.

“You were never nobody, Maria,” Daniel said softly. “I noticed you the first week you started working here. I watched how you cared for this place. I watched how you loved your daughter. And for seven years, I was too proud, too entangled in high-society games, to do what I should have done on day one.”

Maria’s breath caught. Her skin burned wherever his thumb touched her, a jolt of pure, electrifying heat racing straight down her spine.

Before she could form a single word of a reply, a sudden, violent crash echoed from the floor-to-ceiling windows of the main living area outside the suite.

Glass shattering.

Daniel’s expression shifted in a microsecond from gentle warmth to lethal, predatory focus. He dropped his hand, spun around, and reached instantly for the SIG Sauer P226 holstered beneath his left arm.

“Stay in the room,” Daniel ordered, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp command. “Lock the door behind me. Do not open it for anyone except Dante or myself.”

Before Maria could protest, Daniel vanished into the hallway, closing the heavy door with a decisive click.
