Chapter 4 - The Heart of the Fortress

By Monday morning, the atmosphere within the Moretti estate had transformed into a high-strung tactical chessboard.

On the surface, nothing had changed. The estate’s sixty acres of manicured lawns, stone walls, and security gates appeared serene. But inside, Adrien had placed his most elite operators on high alert.

Elena and Sophie had settled into the expansive master guest suite across the hall from the triplets. To the children, the arrangement was a paradise.

The triplets, who had spent eight months withdrawn, anxious, and prone to violent crying fits, began to blossom. Miles started speaking full sentences again. Nora laughed out loud when Sophie showed her how to draw with crayons on giant butcher paper spread across the living room floor. And Theo followed Elena around the kitchen like a tiny, determined shadow.

From his private office monitors, Adrien watched the security feeds.

He saw Elena sitting at the kitchen island, patiently wiping pancake batter from Miles’s chin while singing a soft Italian lullaby she had learned from her grandmother. He watched as Sophie shared her wooden blocks with Nora without a single fight.

For the first time since Claire’s death, the cold, silent mausoleum he called a home felt alive.

At 2:00 PM, Adrien stepped into the main living room. He had stripped off his suit jacket, wearing only a black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the intricate dark tattoos that covered his arms—symbols of the Moretti bloodline and the trials he had survived.

Sophie was sitting on the rug, arranging her cloth doll’s yellow dress.

Adrien walked over and sat down directly on the floor beside her.

Elena, who was folding toddler laundry near the sofa, froze. She had never seen Adrien Moretti sit on the floor in her entire life.

“Sophie,” Adrien said quietly.

The four-year-old looked up at him, unbothered by his intimidating frame. “Yes, Mr. Addy?”

Adrien’s lips twitched with the ghost of a rare smile. Nobody called him Mr. Addy.

“Where did you get this doll?” he asked gently, pointing to the cloth toy.

Sophie tilted her head. “A nice man gave it to me.”

Elena dropped the towel she was holding. She rushed over, her voice rising in panic. “Sophie! What nice man? You told me you found that doll in the playground box!”

“Elena, calm down,” Adrien said softly, raising a hand to keep her voice steady. He turned back to the little girl. “When did the nice man give it to you, Sophie?”

“Last week,” Sophie said, hugging the doll. “When Mommy was inside the big grocery store. I was sitting on the bench outside with Mr. Thomas.”

Thomas was the senior estate driver Adrien had assigned to drive staff members for errands.

“What did the man look like?” Adrien asked, keeping his tone light, as if playing a game.

“He had shiny shoes,” Sophie recalled, thinking hard. “And a big gold ring with a snake on it. He said my doll was old, so he took her to his car to give her a magic heart that clicks.”

Adrien’s eyes hardened into diamond.

A gold ring with a snake.

The mark of Lorenzo Falco—the head of the Falco syndicate in Chicago, Adrien’s fiercest rival in the northern shipping routes. Falco had been trying to expand into New York for three years, but Adrien had systematically blocked every attempt.

Now Adrien had his answer. Falco hadn't just murdered Claire to weaken him; he was using the bug in the doll to monitor Adrien’s grief, waiting for the moment Adrien broke so he could launch a full-scale takeover of the Moretti territory.

Adrien stood up smoothly, turning to Elena. Her face was pale, her hands trembling as she realized her daughter had been approached by a predator.

“He touched my daughter...” Elena whispered, her voice shaking with horror. “He came near my child...”

Adrien stepped close to Elena. Without thinking, he reached out and took her shaking hands into his large, warm palms. The contrast between his scarred, tattooed skin and her soft hands was stark, but the reassurance in his grip was absolute.

“Listen to me, Elena,” Adrien said, his voice dropping into a dark, solemn vow. “Nobody touches your daughter and lives to brag about it. I give you my word on my life: Lorenzo Falco will never take another step toward this family.”

May you like

Elena looked into Adrien’s eyes. In that moment, she didn't see a mob boss or a ruthless billionaire. She saw a guardian who would tear down heaven and earth to keep them safe.

“Thank you, Adrien,” she murmured, using his first name for the very first time.
