Chapter 7 - Unveiling the Shadows

The following week, the transition back to normal life was smoother than Penelope ever could have imagined—though 'normal' now came with armored black SUVs trailing two cars behind her delivery van.

Blossom & Thyme was booming. Gabriel had quietly cleared all her back rent, anonymously paid off her supplier debts, and sent three corporate accounts her way that booked flowers for luxury galas months in advance. Her shop was filled with the sweet scent of fresh eucalyptus, peonies, and imported French roses.

Yet, the biggest change wasn't the bank account. It was the man who kept showing up at closing time.

Every evening around 7:00 PM, a sleek black car would pull up beside the laundromat. Gabriel Santoro would step out, wearing a simple black turtleneck and a tailored coat, walking into her shop with a quiet, grounding presence that chased away the exhaustion of the day.

They didn't talk about the mob. They talked about favorite childhood movies, the best slice of pizza in Brooklyn, and why orchids were notoriously dramatic to grow. Gabriel listened to her—truly listened—in a way that made her feel seen, appreciated, and cherished.

One evening, as they sat together on crates in the back room of the shop sharing takeout Italian food, Gabriel looked across at her with a soft, contemplative expression.

"You know," Gabriel said, twirling a fork in his pasta, "for thirty-five years, I thought power was about control. About building walls so high nobody could ever touch you."

Penelope wiped her mouth with a napkin and looked at him gently. "And now?"

"Now I realize that walls just keep you in the dark," Gabriel confessed, his voice quiet and sincere. "The day you stepped out from behind that rose wall with your phone shaking... you terrified me more than any rival boss ever could. Because you proved to me that real strength isn't about fear. It's about honesty."

Penelope’s heart swelled. She reached across the small wooden table, placing her hand over his large, calloused one. Gabriel turned his hand over, interlocking his fingers securely with hers.

"You're a softie underneath all that mob-boss armor, Santoro," she teased softly, a bright smile lighting up her face.

"Only for you, Hayes," Gabriel murmured, leaning across the table and pressing a warm, lingering kiss to her knuckles.
