Chapter 5 - The Syndicate’s Retribution

The sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky over the Hudson River in bruised shades of purple and orange. But inside the Santoro estate, the atmosphere was a war zone.

Penelope was escorted down to the lower security wing—not as a prisoner, but because the grounds were no longer safe. The failed wedding had triggered a domino effect across the underworld. Vivienne Laurent hadn't just acted alone; she was a pawn for Viktor Sterling, the ruthless leader of the Russian syndicate who wanted absolute control over the New York shipping lanes.

Sitting in a comfortable guest suite that looked more like a five-star hotel room than a safehouse, Penelope paced back and forth across the plush Persian rug.

What on earth am I doing here? she asked herself, wringing her hands. I should be checking on my shop. I should be watering the hydrangeas.

Instead, she was trapped in a mob fortress while a turf war erupted outside.

A soft knock sounded at the door. Before she could answer, it opened, and Marcus stepped inside, carrying a tray of hot food and a secure tablet.

"Miss Hayes," Marcus nodded politely. "Mr. Santoro asked me to make sure you were settled. Dinner is provided."

"I don't want dinner, I want to go home!" Penelope said, her nerves finally snapping. "You people are insane! I’m a florist! I belong behind a counter selling carnations to old ladies, not hiding in a mob boss's panic room while Russians shoot up my city!"

Marcus remained entirely unfazed, his stoic expression unyielding. "Outside these gates right now, Viktor Sterling's men are hunting for anyone connected to Gabriel Santoro. If you walk out that door, you become a target simply because you were standing behind the roses when the truth came out."

Penelope froze. The reality of her situation hit her like a physical blow. She wasn't just an innocent bystander anymore. She was tied to Gabriel Santoro, whether she liked it or not.

"Where is he?" she asked quietly.

"The boss is handling it," Marcus replied evenly. "Sterling thinks he caught us off guard. He’s about to find out why they call Gabriel the Ghost of Manhattan."

Miles away, in the damp, echoing shipping yards of sector four, the prophecy was already unfolding.

Gabriel stood in the center of a massive container warehouse, surrounded by a dozen of his most elite enforcers. Across from them stood Viktor Sterling and twenty heavily armed Russian operatives, their assault rifles raised.

"You ruined a very profitable arrangement, Gabriel," Sterling sneered, adjusting his tailored wool coat in the chilly night air. "Vivienne was supposed to deliver the ledger, and you were supposed to be blind. Now? Your empire is bleeding."

Gabriel stood tall, his hands resting casually inside his pockets. He didn't even flinch at the barrels pointed directly at his chest.

"You think a bride with a counterfeit smile and a stolen flash drive was going to bring down the Santoro family, Viktor?" Gabriel’s voice cut through the warehouse like a razor.

"She brought you down enough to bring you out of your fortress," Sterling laughed, raising his hand to signal his men. "End him."

Before the word could leave Sterling's lips, the overhead lights of the warehouse clicked off. Pitch blackness swallowed the room for a fraction of a second.

Then, the shadows came alive.

From the rafters, through the container stacks, and from every dark corner, Gabriel’s men struck with terrifying, synchronized precision. Flashbangs detonated with blinding white light and deafening thunder. Gunfire cracked through the cavernous space, mixed with the sound of breaking bone and collapsing steel.

It wasn't a firefight. It was an execution.

Within ninety seconds, the entire Russian detail was disarmed, pinned to the concrete floor with cold steel pressed against their throats.

Gabriel walked slowly through the smoke and chaos, stopping directly in front of a terrified Viktor Sterling, who was pinned against a shipping container by Marcus.

Gabriel leaned in close, his slate-gray eyes burning with absolute, lethal dominance.

"Tell your bosses back in Moscow," Gabriel whispered softly, "that New York belongs to the Santoros. And if any of you ever touch my city—or my people—again, I won't just freeze your accounts. I'll erase you from history."
