Chapter 7 - The Trap is Sprung

Two weeks later, inside the high-security federal prosecutor’s office in Zapopan, a delicate legal trap was set into motion.
Brenda’s new defense counsel—having realized that a full trial would result in a guaranteed life sentence—had approached the federal prosecutor with an offer: Brenda was willing to surrender all contested corporate shares and offshore accounts voluntarily, if the prosecution agreed to drop the attempted murder charge down to simple fraud and criminal negligence.
The prosecutor, Judge Alvarez, looked across the mahogany conference table at Daniel and his legal team.
“Mr. Cárdenas,” Judge Alvarez said formally. “Your wife’s legal team is offering a complete surrender of Cárdenas Enterprises. You will regain 100% control of your assets immediately. However, it means she would serve a reduced sentence of seven years instead of thirty.”
Daniel sat at the head of the table in a sharp charcoal suit, looking entirely recovered, his posture upright and commanding. Beside him sat Doña Aurora, wearing a dignified black shawl over her shoulders.
“Seven years?” Daniel repeated, his voice dangerously calm. “Seven years for trying to bury me alive? Seven years for turning my life into a calculated execution?”
“It’s a standard plea negotiation, Mr. Cárdenas,” the prosecutor explained. “It avoids a protracted trial that could drag on for eighteen months.”
Daniel stood up slowly, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the bustling plaza below. He watched the cars pass by for a long moment before turning back to face the room.
“My wife didn't make a mistake, Judge Alvarez,” Daniel said, his voice echoing off the walls. “She didn't accidentally sign the wrong paper or miscalculate a tax form. She sat across from me at our anniversary dinner, smiled into my eyes, and poured a neurotoxin into my cup knowing full well that I would suffer hours of conscious paralysis before suffocating in a dark wooden box.”
The room went completely silent.
“She wanted me dead,” Daniel continued, stepping closer to the table. “And she wanted my mother humiliated and erased. I reject the plea deal.”
The prosecutor blinked in surprise. “Mr. Cárdenas, if we go to trial, her defense team will try to paint you as an unstable executive prone to delusions. It will be messy.”
“Let them try,” Daniel said, a cold, confident smile touching the corner of his lips. “Because we didn't just reject her plea. We set a trap of our own.”
Just then, the conference room door opened, and federal investigator Commander Silva walked in carrying a secure digital tablet. He placed it down on the table in front of Daniel.

“It worked, Mr. Cárdenas,” Commander Silva announced. “Alejandro Vance just took the bait. Thinking Brenda was about to take a plea deal that would expose his involvement in the financial embezzlement, Vance tried to clear his offshore accounts this morning. Federal agents intercepted his transfers thirty minutes ago. He’s currently being arrested at his corporate headquarters.”
Daniel nodded slowly. The web was complete. The conspirators had turned on each other, exactly as predicted.
