Chapter 6 - The Dinner of Glass and Silver

Forty-eight hours later, the grand dining room of the Highland Park estate was bathed in the warm, deceptive glow of crystal chandeliers.

Senator Richard Sinclair sat at the right hand of the long mahogany table, wearing a crisp charcoal suit, his silver hair brushed to perfection, smiling as he cut into a rare filet mignon. Opposite him sat Madeline, looking radiant in a cream-colored silk dress, laughing lightly at one of her father’s political anecdotes.

Victor sat at the head of the table. His posture was upright, his expression an impenetrable mask of calm hospitality.

“I must say, Victor,” Senator Sinclair chuckled, raising a glass of expensive Napa Valley Cabernet, “wedding planning can test even the strongest relationships. But seeing how dedicated you and Madeline are to blending your lives—and blending this wonderful estate—makes me very optimistic for the future.”

“Optimism is a valuable trait, Senator,” Victor replied smoothly, lifting his own glass. “Especially when dealing with unexpected... complications.”

Madeline paused, her fork hovering inches from her mouth. A micro-expression of unease flickered across her features before she quickly smoothed it over with a sweet smile. “Complications, darling? Is something wrong with the wedding arrangements?”

“Nothing that can’t be resolved,” Victor said, his dark eyes locking onto hers across the table. “In fact, I invited a special guest to join us for dessert tonight. Someone who has taken a very... intimate interest in our family’s health.”

Before Madeline or the Senator could respond, the heavy dining room doors clicked open.

Nora Hayes stepped into the room.

She wasn't wearing her gray housekeeping uniform. She wore a sharp, tailored black blazer and trousers, looking every bit the professional medical researcher she had once been. In her gloved hands, she carried a silver tray holding a single, heavy crystal decanter.

Senator Sinclair dropped his fork. It hit the porcelain plate with a sharp, echoing clink.

His eyes darted from Nora to Victor, the color instantly draining from his weathered face. “What is the meaning of this? Why is a disgraced former nurse wandering around a private family dinner?”

Madeline stood up so fast her chair screeched against the hardwood floor, her face twisting into a mask of pure panic. “Victor! Get her out of here! She’s a thief! She was fired from her hospital for stealing drugs!”

“She wasn't stealing drugs, Madeline,” Victor said softly, setting his wine glass down on the table with deliberate slowness. He stood up, towering over the table like a judge delivering a death sentence. “She was auditing a pediatric drug trial funded by your father’s foundation. A trial where children were systematically paralyzed by synthetic neurotoxins.”

“This is insane!” Senator Sinclair roared, slamming his palms onto the table, his political veneer cracking entirely. “You’re listening to a criminal lunatic! Madeline, call the police right now!”

“The police are already here, Senator,” a calm voice announced from the doorway.

Vance stepped into the room, flanked by four armed security guards carrying federal arrest warrants stamped with the seal of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Behind them stood two federal marshals.

Victor walked slowly around the table until he stood directly beside Madeline. She was trembling, her hands clutching the edge of the table so hard her knuckles were stark white.

“You tried to kill my son, Madeline,” Victor whispered, his voice barely above a hiss, yet carrying enough venom to freeze the blood in her veins. “You thought I was just a mob boss who only understood bullets and muscle. You forgot that a man who protects his family learns every trick in the book.”

Madeline looked up at him, her tear-filled eyes no longer innocent, but filled with a cornered, feral desperation. “You can’t prove anything! My father will—!”

“Your father’s campaign accounts were seized by the FBI thirty minutes ago,” Victor interrupted coldly. “Along with the backup hard drives from Sinclair Pharmaceuticals containing every signed authorization order for the trials. Including yours.”

Vance stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Madeline’s wrists.

As they dragged her screaming toward the double doors, Senator Sinclair lunged across the table toward Victor with a hidden letter opener, screaming curses like a madman. Two federal marshals tackled him to the polished floor before he could take three steps, pinning him face-down against the rug.

Victor didn't even flinch. He watched the man who had ordered the assassination of his wife and the poisoning of his son get hauled out in zip-ties, his expensive suit ruined by the dust of the floor.
