Chapter 3 - The Senator’s Shadow

The rain was lashing against the tinted bulletproof windows of Victor’s armored Cadillac as it sped north along the deserted highway toward Highland Park.

In the backseat, Victor stared out into the gray sheets of water, his mind racing through a labyrinth of dark calculations.

Why?

Why would Madeline Sinclair target an eight-year-old boy who couldn't even speak, let alone threaten her social standing or her future political dynasty?

Leo was paralyzed. He was trapped in a shattered body, dependent on machines and caregivers just to draw breath. He posed no threat to the Sinclair family’s ambitions.

Unless...

Victor’s hand clenched into a tight fist against his knee.

Unless Leo wasn't the target. Unless Leo was the message.

His thoughts flashed back to the car crash fourteen months ago—the rainy night on Lake Shore Drive where a black SUV had deliberately sideswiped his armored Cadillac, sending them careening into a concrete pillar. Clara had died instantly. Leo had broken his spine.

At the time, the police blamed slick roads and reckless driving. Victor had hunted down the driver of the SUV within forty-eight hours and buried him in an unmarked gravel pit in Indiana.

He had assumed it was a rival mob hit from the Marcone family.

Now, sitting in the dark of his car as the estate gates swung open, a cold, sickening horror began to take root in his chest. Senator Richard Sinclair had been up for re-election that exact month, pushing a sweeping anti-corruption bill that targeted mob-controlled shipping ports. Clara—before she died—had been working as an independent forensic accountant auditing state infrastructure funds.

Had Clara discovered something about the Sinclairs?

Had she found the trail of dirty money linking the state senator’s campaign to the very syndicates Victor fought every day?

If so, the crash on Lake Shore Drive hadn't been a warning from the mafia.

It had been an assassination ordered by a United States Senator.

And Madeline—sweet, charitable, philanthropic Madeline—was part of the cleanup crew.
