Chapter 9 - Confessions in the Dark

Back at the mansion, the smoke was slowly clearing through the shattered windows of the grand foyer.
Three of Moretti’s men lay unconscious against the marble pillars. The rest had retreated in complete disarray, leaving their weapons behind as they fled toward the woods.
Salvatore Moretti himself was pinned against the front door by Lorenzo, who had him by the throat, lifting the older man six inches off the ground with one hand.
“You thought you could touch my son?” Lorenzo whispered, his face inches from Moretti’s purple, choking visage. “You thought my wife’s death made me weak?”
“K... kill me,” Moretti rasped, clawing weakly at Lorenzo’s wrist.
“Killing you is too easy,” Lorenzo said coldly. He slammed Moretti’s head against the oak door with a sickening thud, sending the older man collapsing into unconsciousness at his feet.
Lorenzo stepped back, wiping a speck of blood from his cheek with the back of his hand. He looked around the ruined foyer, then up toward the third-floor balcony.
