Chapter 5 - The Doctor's Secret Ledger

Three days later, Dr. Julian Halloran sat in his private office on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, sweating profusely despite the air conditioning humming at full blast.
Across his mahogany desk sat Mateo Calder, wearing a black trench coat and a smile that promised absolute violence.
“Doctor,” Mateo said smoothly, tossing a thick, leather-bound medical ledger onto the blotter. “You left this behind in the nursery safe on Long Island. Mr. Rossi thought you might want it back before the medical board reviews your hospital licensing.”
Halloran swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. “That... that ledger contains confidential patient records. Federal privacy laws—”
“Federal privacy laws don't apply when you’re committing corporate conspiracy,” Mateo interrupted, leaning forward and resting his palms on the desk. “Let’s review what we found inside, shall we? Entries from three months ago. Payouts from a Moretti-controlled shell company to your Swiss bank account. Instructions to alter Sophia Rossi’s prenatal vitamin prescriptions during her second trimester.”
Halloran went completely white. “I was pressured! They threatened my family!”
“They threatened your bank account, Doctor,” Mateo corrected coldly. “You switched Sophia’s supplements, introduced a slow-acting metabolic blocker that weakened both the mother and the fetus, and then you ensured that when the car bomb went off, her injuries would be unsurvivable.”
“I didn't know about the bomb!” Halloran shrieked, standing up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the Persian rug. “I swear to God, I only thought we were inducing a premature delivery so Moretti could compromise the Rossi succession!”
Mateo didn't flinch. He slowly pulled a small, silver-barreled revolver from his coat and laid it gently on the desk next to the ledger.

“Mr. Rossi sends his regards,” Mateo said softly.
Before the doctor could scream, the office door clicked shut, and the sound of a silenced gunshot swallowed the rest of the afternoon.
