Chapter 5 - The Night Walkers

At 2:15 a.m., the mansion was completely silent.
Outside, the Chicago rain fell in a heavy, rhythmic sheet, drumming against the slate roof.
In the master bedroom, Victoria lay asleep on her side, her breathing deep and even. Beside her, Daniel lay with his eyes wide open in the dark, watching the red digital clock on the nightstand count down the minutes.
A faint, double-vibration buzzed against his wrist—the silent alert on his smartwatch.
Frank’s team is inside.
Daniel slid silently out of bed, wearing a dark silk robe and slippers. He moved across the plush carpet without making a sound, slipping through the bedroom door and down the grand spiral staircase into the dark foyer.
Three shadows moved through the living room with surgical efficiency.
Frank Miller and two elite tech operatives wore night-vision goggles and soft tactical boots. Within twelve minutes, tiny 4K pinhole camera lenses were embedded in the smoke detectors, the chandelier mounts, the kitchen crown molding, and the corner of Daniel’s home office desk. High-frequency directional microphones were sealed behind the electrical faceplates.
Frank stepped up to Daniel in the dark kitchen.
"It’s done," Frank whispered, handing Daniel an encrypted tablet. "You now have 24/7 video and audio feeds streaming directly to my secure mobile command unit in the driveway."
"Did you check her car?" Daniel asked quietly.
Frank pulled a small plastic evidence box from his pocket. "We searched the glove box of her Mercedes. We found a secondary white bottle hidden inside a modified emergency first-aid kit. It contains fifty unmarked white pills. We took three for chemical analysis."
"And Thomas Sterling’s server?"
Frank smiled grimly in the dark. "My digital team breached Sterling’s firm server at midnight. We found a hidden, password-protected directory named PROJECT MERIDIAN. Boss... it’s worse than we thought."
"Show me," Daniel said.
Frank opened a file on the tablet. The bright screen illuminated Daniel’s dark face.
"It’s a complete liquidation blueprint," Frank explained softly. "The moment you are pronounced dead, Sterling has pre-signed corporate board resolutions ready to be filed with the state. They plan to sell off Carter Meridian’s real estate assets within forty-eight hours to an offshore buyer in Panama—a shell company owned fifty percent by Victoria and fifty percent by Sterling."
Daniel stared at the documents. The sheer arrogance of it made his blood boil. They hadn't just planned his murder; they had already spent his fortune in their minds.
"They missed one detail," Daniel whispered.
"What's that?"
"They assumed I wouldn't listen to a six-year-old girl."
Suddenly, a floorboard creaked on the second-floor landing above them.
Frank and his team vanished into the shadows of the service hallway instantly, like ghosts fading into fog.
Daniel stood perfectly still by the kitchen island, picking up a glass and pouring water from the dispenser just as soft footsteps descended the stairs.
Victoria stood at the entrance of the kitchen, wearing a long white robe, her hair falling loosely around her shoulders. She looked at Daniel standing in the dark.
"Daniel?" she asked, her voice raspy with sleep. "What are you doing down here in the dark?"
Daniel took a slow sip of water, staring at her through the gloom.
"I couldn't sleep," Daniel said, his voice flat and calm. "I had a strange feeling... like someone was watching me."
Victoria froze for a fraction of a second, her hands tightening around the belt of her robe. Then she forced a soft, comforting laugh and stepped into the kitchen.
"You’re just working too hard, darling," she whispered, reaching out to stroke his arm. "Come back to bed. I’ll make you a hot tea."
May you like
Daniel looked down at her hand on his arm.
"No tea tonight, Victoria," Daniel said softly, stepping back from her touch. "I think I’ve had enough of your hospitality."
