Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Records

By 5:00 p.m., Daniel was sitting inside a black SUV parked in an alley three blocks away from his estate.

Frank Miller climbed into the passenger seat, handing Daniel a thick leather folder filled with printouts, financial tracing graphs, and grainy surveillance photographs.

"You were right to have me look deep, boss," Frank said, clicking his pen. "Victoria Lang doesn't exist."

Daniel looked up from the folder. "What do you mean she doesn't exist?"

"The real Victoria Lang died of leukemia in an Oregon hospice nine years ago," Frank explained. "Your fiancée stole her identity using a forged birth certificate and a bought social security number in Nevada. Her real name is Evelyn Mercer."

Daniel flipped through the pages. The photographs attached showed a younger woman with darker hair, standing outside a courthouse in Florida twelve years ago.

"Who is Evelyn Mercer?" Daniel asked.

"A master predator," Frank said grimly. "She’s been married twice before. In 2012, she married a wealthy retired contractor in Tampa named Arthur Vance. Fourteen months after the wedding, Arthur died of what doctors ruled as 'complications from congestive heart failure.' She inherited his four-million-dollar estate."

Daniel felt a heavy, dull ache behind his eyes. "And the second husband?"

"A software founder in Denver named Gregory Sterling," Frank continued. "Married in 2017. He suffered a sudden, fatal neurological collapse in 2019. She walked away with nine million dollars from his life insurance policy. Both times, she used different aliases. Both times, the men were wealthy, lived isolated lives, and signed revised wills favoring her shortly before their deaths."

Daniel tapped his fingers on the leather folder. "She’s a professional widow."

"Worse," Frank added, sliding a second document across. "She’s not working alone. A woman like her needs an insider to manage the legal transfers, the forged medical records, and the offshore laundering. We traced her financial transactions over the last forty-eight hours. She made three encrypted satellite calls to a private law firm in downtown Chicago."

Daniel stared at the name printed on the phone log.

Sterling & Vance Legal Partners — Thomas Sterling, Managing Partner.

Thomas Sterling was not a stranger. He was Daniel’s personal corporate attorney, the man who held power of attorney over Daniel’s estate, and the legal mind who had drafted Daniel’s prenuptial agreement six months ago.

"Thomas," Daniel whispered, his voice turning to ice. "Thomas introduced me to her at the gala."

"It was a coordinated long-con, boss," Frank said gently. "Sterling drafts the estate documents, Evelyn executes the slow poison, you die of 'natural causes,' Sterling validates the revised will, and they split your three-hundred-million-dollar empire down the middle."

Daniel sat back in the leather seat, staring out at the rain beginning to streak the tinted glass.

The betrayal hit him not like a blow to the chest, but like a sudden, terrifying illumination. His entire life—his romance, his upcoming wedding, his quiet domestic peace—had been a meticulously staged execution chamber designed by his two most trusted companions.

"Where is she now?" Daniel asked.

"She returned to the house an hour ago," Frank said. "She bought fresh flowers at a market in Lincoln Park and spent twenty minutes chatting pleasantly with the gate guard. She’s acting like a loving bride-to-be."

"And Elena and Annie?"

"Safe inside the staff quarters. My men are monitoring the house feeds. She hasn't approached the kid since this morning."

Daniel looked at his watch. It was 5:45 p.m.

"Frank," Daniel said, turning to his security director. "I want wiretaps and high-definition pinhole cameras installed in every room of my house tonight while she’s asleep. I want audio coverage of every phone call she makes. And I want a forensic team to clone Thomas Sterling’s primary server by midnight."

"Are we bringing in the federal authorities?" Frank asked.

"Not until I hold the rope they’re going to hang themselves with," Daniel said. "Drive me home."
