Chapter 9 - The Grand Re-Entrance

Two weeks later.
The annual Manhattan Architectural Preservation Gala was the most exclusive, high-society event of the autumn season. Held in the breathtaking grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, it drew senators, billionaires, cultural icons, and the top tier of New York’s real estate elite.
Cameras flashed blindingly outside the velvet ropes as town cars pulled up to the entrance.
Inside the glittering ballroom, champagne flutes chimed softly against a background of classical string music.
Near the buffet table, Victor Thorne stood with a group of high-society associates, laughing softly as he adjusted his bow tie. “Moretti hasn’t been seen in public for weeks,” Thorne remarked smugly to a group of investors. “Rumor has it he’s holed up in his estate playing nanny to some stray charity case he picked up off the street. His focus is slipping.”
Before anyone could reply, the heavy mahogany doors at the entrance of the ballroom swung open.
The murmurs and laughter in the room died down instantly.
A heavy, reverent hush swept across the two hundred guests as every head turned toward the doorway.
Luca Moretti walked in.
He was dressed in a pristine, custom-tailored black tuxedo, his slate-gray eyes scanning the room with calm, absolute authority.
But it wasn't Luca that caught everyone’s breath.
It was the woman on his arm.
Emma Hartley wore a breathtaking, custom-designed emerald-green silk evening gown that hugged her curves with quiet, effortless elegance. Her dark hair was styled in intricate Hollywood waves, diamond drop earrings caught the crystal light of the chandeliers, and her posture—once broken and defensive—was now radiant, poised, and utterly unshakeable.
Whispers erupted like wildfire across the ballroom.
“Who is that?” “Isn’t that the girl from the hospital?” “Look at the diamonds she’s wearing... those are from the Moretti family vault!”
Victor Thorne’s glass stopped halfway to his mouth. His eyes widened in sheer disbelief.
Luca walked with Emma straight down the center aisle, nodding politely to visiting dignitaries and rival executives alike, making it unmistakably clear to every single person in New York that Emma Moretti was under his absolute protection.
As they reached the center of the dais, Luca leaned down, his voice dropping into a warm murmur meant only for her.
“Are you enjoying the view, Emma?” Luca asked softly.
May you like
Emma looked around the glittering ballroom, remembering the girl who used to clean architectural blueprints in a freezing basement apartment just a few weeks ago. She looked up into Luca’s dark, devoted eyes, feeling a profound wave of strength and peace.
“I’m enjoying it very much,” Emma smiled, her voice steady and clear. “Let’s go show them what real architecture looks like.”
