Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Limestone Fortress

The Maybach turned off Fifth Avenue, passing through heavy, wrought-iron security gates that swung open automatically before the vehicle even touched the sensor.
Emma blinked in awe as the car wound up a private, tree-lined drive in the Upper East Side, terminating in a vast cobblestone courtyard dominated by a magnificent, ivy-clad limestone mansion that looked less like a home and more like a European palace.
Armed security guards stood at attention near the massive arched oak doors, their black suits blending into the rainy night, their posture disciplined and unyielding.
“Is this... is this a hotel?” Emma asked softly, clutching her sleeping baby as the car came to a smooth halt.
“This is home, for as long as you need it,” Luca replied, opening his own door and stepping out into the brisk night air before walking around to open hers. He offered his gloved hand to help her out.
Emma hesitated for a fraction of a second, then placed her small, cold hand in his. The warmth of his grip anchored her against the overwhelming tide of her new reality.
As they stepped into the grand foyer, a silver-haired butler in a pristine tuxedo bowed respectfully.
“Welcome home, Mr. Moretti. Welcome, Miss Emma,” the butler said smoothly, his eyes flashing with polite warmth as he looked at the baby. “Mrs. Gable has prepared the east wing nursery. The medical equipment you requested from Manhattan General has already been installed and calibrated.”
Emma stared at the butler, then at Luca. “You... you prepared for us to come here? Before you even signed the papers?”
Luca took off his coat, handing it to a hovering attendant. “I never leave important matters to chance, Emma. When I saw you in that hospital hallway, broken and exhausted, I knew you weren't leaving without protection.”
“Protection from what?” Emma whispered, though deep down, she knew the answer. Protection from Derek. Protection from a world that had preyed on her silence for years.
“From everything,” Luca said simply. “Come. Let’s get you settled.”
The east wing suite was breathtaking. It wasn't just a bedroom; it was a sprawling, multi-room sanctuary decorated in soft creams, pale blues, and warm oak. A magnificent crib carved from white mahogany sat beneath a bay window overlooking the glittering skyline of Central Park. A private bathroom featured a marble soaking tub, and a small kitchenette was stocked with fresh organic milk, fruit, and warm herbal teas.
An older woman with kind, crinkling eyes and an apron tied over her gray dress stepped forward from the nursery.
“Hello, my dear. I’m Mrs. Gable,” the woman said gently, extending her arms. “May I take the little angel? You must be exhausted down to your bones.”
Emma looked down at her daughter, whose tiny chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm. Trusting anyone was difficult after Derek, but looking into Mrs. Gable’s warm eyes—and feeling the quiet, unyielding strength of Luca standing just behind her—Emma nodded slowly and transferred the baby into the housekeeper's skilled arms.
“Thank you,” Emma whispered, her voice catching.

Luca stepped closer, placing a hand lightly on her shoulder. The heat of his touch radiated through her thin sweater.
“Get some rest, Emma,” Luca instructed softly. “Tomorrow, we handle the legalities. Tomorrow, we build your new life.”
