Chapter 6 - The Wire and the Road

Dawn broke over Providence with a cold, unforgiving light that painted the harbor in shades of slate and steel.

Inside the subterranean logistics hub beneath the Falcone shipping warehouses, forty miles from the main estate, the atmosphere was charged with the quiet tension of an operating room.

Arthur Cole sat tied to a heavy metal chair in the center of the concrete room. His designer suit was wrinkled, his silver hair disheveled, and his face was bruised from a confrontation that had occurred when Adriano’s security detail intercepted his car on the highway.

Standing in front of him was Adriano, leaning casually against a steel workbench while examining a thick stack of printed bank statements.

“You can’t do this, Adriano!” Arthur spat, struggling against the heavy zip-ties binding his wrists to the chair. “We are business partners! We have a joint development agreement for the entire East Providence waterfront! The banks will freeze your assets within twenty-four hours if I go missing!”

Adriano didn't look up from the papers. He slowly turned a page, his eyes scanning the digital routing numbers that traced embezzled insurance funds directly through three offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands under Arthur’s name.

“Your waterfront development agreement is already in the shredder, Arthur,” Adriano said calmly. “As for the banks... your accounts were seized by federal authorities at 4:00 AM this morning, courtesy of an anonymous tip provided by my legal team.”

Arthur’s face turned the color of spoiled milk. “You... you ratted on your own joint venture?”

“I liquidated a liability,” Adriano corrected, tossing the papers onto the workbench. He pushed off the table and walked slowly toward Arthur until he stood inches away, towering over the terrified real estate mogul.

“Three years ago, your daughter and you stole two hundred and fifty thousand dollars from a widowed mother in West Virginia,” Adriano said, his voice dropping into a low, deadly purr. “You thought no one would ever look into the books of a dead mechanic.”

“It was pocket change!” Arthur snarled, desperation overriding his fear. “People die on roads every day! Who cares about some nobody from the mountains?”

The sound of Adriano’s fist connecting with Arthur’s jaw echoed off the concrete walls like a gunshot.

Arthur slumped sideways, spitting blood onto the gray floor, his eyes wide with absolute terror.

“She is not a nobody,” Adriano said, wiping his knuckles with a clean white handkerchief. “She is the heart of this house now. And every dollar you and your daughter ever stole from her is going to be paid back—starting with every commercial property you own in this state, signed over to her name by noon today.”

Before Arthur could reply, Marcus Vance stepped out of the communications booth at the back of the room, holding a secure satellite phone.

“Boss,” Marcus said, his expression unusually grim. “You need to take this. It’s from the main estate.”

Adriano took the phone, his brow furrowing. “Speak.”

“It’s Rebecca and the little girl,” Marcus reported rapidly. “They’re gone.”

Adriano froze, the blood running cold in his veins. “Gone? What do you mean gone? The estate is locked down!”

“They left a note on the bedside table,” Marcus said. “She packed her suitcase, took Clementine, and walked out the service gate before dawn. Boss... she didn't want your charity. She’s running.”
