Chapter 7 - The Trial of Truth

Six months later.
The main courtroom of the State Supreme District Court was packed to standing capacity. Journalists from every major regional newspaper and television network lined the back benches, their eyes fixed on the defense table.
Vanessa Reed sat in a dark grey prison uniform, her face gaunt, her hair pulled back into a tight, severe knot. Her once-impeccable aristocratic demeanor had vanished, replaced by a bitter, dark glare that remained fixed on the prosecution floor.
Across the room, Daniel sat in the front gallery row, holding his brother Frank’s hand on one side, and his mother’s hand on the other.
“All rise for the Honorable Judge Marcus Thorne,” the bailiff announced.
The judge took the bench, his expression severe as he looked down at the jury box.
“Has the jury reached a verdict in the case of The State v. Vanessa Reed?”
The jury foreman, a tall, gray-haired veteran, stood up, holding a folded white paper. “We have, Your Honor.”
The bailiff brought the paper to the judge, who reviewed it silently before nodding.
“Will the defendant please stand,” Judge Thorne commanded.
Vanessa stood up slowly, her hands trembling slightly within her handcuffs.
“On Count One: First-Degree Premeditated Murder in the death of Rachel Vance—how do you find?”
“Guilty,” the foreman announced clearly.
A low, collective gasp swept through the gallery, followed by a soft, emotional sob from Rachel’s mother sitting behind Daniel.
“On Count Two: Felony Child Abuse against a Minor?”
“Guilty.”
“On Count Three: Felony Tampering with Physical Evidence?”
“Guilty.”
“On Count Four: Corporate Fraud and Embezzlement?”
“Guilty on all counts, Your Honor.”
Judge Thorne set the papers down, looking over his spectacles at Vanessa with unyielding, cold severity.
“Vanessa Reed,” Judge Thorne spoke, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. “You entered a home built on love and trust, and you systematically dismantled it out of pure, unadulterated greed. You took the life of a devoted mother, and then spent two years inflicting physical and psychological torture on her grieving children to cover your tracks.”
He didn't hesitate for a single second.
“I sentence you to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole at the Taycheedah Correctional Institution. Furthermore, all financial assets, real estate holdings, and trusts acquired through your fraudulent actions are permanently forfeited and restored to the estate of Rachel Vance.”
Vanessa’s knees buckled. Her lawyers tried to hold her up, but she collapsed onto her chair, sobbing bitterly as two female corrections officers seized her arms and pulled her toward the side exit door.
As she was led away in shackles, she turned her head toward Daniel, her eyes filled with a desperate, wild madness.

Daniel didn't flinch. He stood tall, looking directly into her eyes without a single trace of fear, anger, or hatred left in his heart—only the cold, immovable reality of absolute justice.
He turned his back on her as the heavy iron door slammed shut, ending her presence in their lives forever.
