Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

By forty-eight hours later, the story had sent shockwaves through the entire state’s legal and political apparatus.
The USB drive retrieved from Rachel’s safe contained audio files recorded automatically by the house’s internal intercom system—a safety feature Rachel had installed weeks before her death after noticing financial discrepancies in the company accounts.
The recording from October 14, 2024, was undeniable:
The sound of two women arguing at the top of the landing. Rachel’s voice ordering Vanessa to leave the property. The sudden, sharp shatter of a wine glass hitting the floor. Vanessa’s voice screaming, “If I can't have this life, you won't either!” Followed by the sickening, heavy thuds of a body falling down thirty hardwood steps.
Forensic teams dispatched to the house by the State Attorney General’s office pulled up the floorboards near the radiator, uncovering three tiny fragments of Italian crystal stained with dried blood. Subsequent DNA testing confirmed the blood belonged to Rachel Vance, while skin cells under the glass rim matched Vanessa Reed.
Lieutenant Miller was arrested at his home at six o’clock the following morning, charged with felony obstruction of justice, bribery, and tampering with evidence in a homicide investigation. Faced with thirty years in state prison, Miller broke within four hours, giving a full recorded confession detailing how Vanessa had paid him two hundred thousand dollars in cash to destroy the original crime scene photos and intimidate Mrs. Delgado.
At the county correctional facility, Vanessa’s high-priced legal team attempted to file for bail, citing her prominent position in the community.
The presiding judge, a no-nonsense federal magistrate, didn't even look up from the evidence summary.
“Bail is denied,” the judge declared, slamming her gavel down with absolute finality. “The defendant represents a severe flight risk, an extreme danger to minors, and is facing charges of First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Felony Child Abuse, and Corporate Fraud.”
Sitting in his lawyer’s office downtown, Daniel signed the final paperwork dissolving all legal ties between Vanessa and his family, revoking her power of attorney, and freezing every asset she had attempted to transfer out of his accounts.
Beside him sat Detective Frank Vance, drinking a fresh cup of coffee, looking out over the city skyline.
“Mrs. Delgado gave her official deposition this morning,” Frank said, setting his cup down. “She confirmed that Vanessa threatened her son’s immigration status to force her to clean the blood and glass before the paramedics arrived. She’s agreed to testify for the state.”
Daniel leaned back in his chair, feeling a weight that he had carried for two long years slowly lifting from his shoulders.
“How are Noah and Maisie doing?” Frank asked softly.
Daniel’s face softened, a genuine, warm smile breaking through his tired features for the first time in months. “They slept through the night last night. No nightmares. No hiding under the beds.”

“Where are they now?”
“At the lake house with my mother,” Daniel said, standing up and grabbing his coat. “And that’s exactly where I’m going right now.”
