Chapter 7 - The Grand Exposure at the Harbor Gala

The gas-style lanterns flickered against the historic brick walls of the Dock Street Theatre courtyard as Adrian Hale escorted Abigail up the three wooden steps toward the central stage.

The three hundred elite guests—politicians, judges, real estate moguls, and philanthropists—remained frozen in place, their champagne glasses hovering halfway to their mouths. The atmosphere was thick with shock, confusion, and a sudden, creeping terror. They had come to applaud charity; they were about to witness an execution.

Eleanor Voss scrambled up the side stairs of the stage, her face flushed red beneath her heavy makeup, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

“Adrian, stop this insanity right now!” Eleanor hissed, grabbing for the sleeve of his tuxedo. “If you play games with me, I will ruin you! I have the governor on speed dial! I have the attorney general sitting right down there!”

Adrian didn't even glance at her. With a flick of his wrist, he brushed her hand away as easily as swatting a fly. He stepped up to the podium, where a sleek black laptop sat connected to the massive LED projector screen mounted behind the stage.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,” Adrian’s deep, resonant voice boomed through the courtyard sound system. “Thank you for coming to celebrate philanthropy tonight. But before we begin our charity auction, I think it’s only fair that we discuss where your donations have actually been going.”

“Cut the microphone!” Eleanor shrieked, turning desperately toward the sound technician in the balcony. “Cut the power right now!”

The technician stared down at his console, paralyzed, as two of Adrian’s massive private security operatives stepped up beside him, resting their hands casually inside their suit jackets.

Adrian tapped the enter key on the laptop.

The massive LED screen behind the stage flickered, cutting away from the promotional banner of the Voss Women’s Outreach Fund and flashing a stark, undeniable title in bold white letters:

AUDIT REPORT: VOSS WOMEN’S OUTHERREACH FUND – FRAUD, EMBEZZLEMENT, AND COVER-UP (2018–2026).

A collective gasp swept through the crowd. Several city councilmen stood up from their tables, their faces draining of color.

“Look at the first slide,” Adrian instructed calmly, his eyes scanning the terrified audience. “These are federal block grants intended for battered women and children across the state. Over the last eight years, nearly thirty-two million dollars vanished from public accounts. But it didn't go to shelters. It didn't go to food programs. It went straight into shell corporations controlled by Eleanor Voss and her brother, the state appropriations chairman.”

“It’s a lie! Fabricated documents! Deepfake garbage!” Eleanor screamed, lunging toward the laptop to smash it off the podium.

Before her fingers could graze the keyboard, Abigail stepped forward.

With a swift, controlled motion, Abigail intercepted Eleanor’s wrist, gripping it with surprising strength. She looked down into the eyes of the woman who had tormented her, starved her, and murdered her husband.

“You always told me to watch my hands, Eleanor,” Abigail said, her voice ringing crystal clear across the courtyard microphones. “Maybe you should have watched yours.”

Adrian clicked to the next slide.

The screen shifted. A new document appeared, accompanied by an audio file waveform.

“This,” Adrian continued quietly, “is a copy of the original financial audit conducted by chief accountant Thomas Mercer in March of 2018. And this... is the recorded phone conversation between Eleanor Voss and a hired mechanic discussing the failure of a vehicle’s brake line on Interstate 90.”

The courtyard plunged into absolute, suffocating silence.

As the scratchy, undeniable audio recording began to play over the speakers—featuring Eleanor’s cold voice discussing a payoff for a staged car accident to silence an honest auditor—the color drained completely from Eleanor’s face. Her knees buckled. She staggered backward against the podium, her manicured fingers clawing at her throat as the weight of fifteen years of deception finally crushed her.

“No... no...” she whimpered, sliding down the wooden panels of the stage until she hit the floor in a heap of green velvet and crushed crystals.

From the front row, a county judge slowly stood up, pulled a pair of silver-rimmed glasses from his pocket, and stared at the projection screen with profound disgust.

The illusion was shattered. The empire of charity built on blood and lies had finally collapsed.
