Chapter 7 - The Final Trap

The takedown of Julian Vance sent shockwaves through the political and financial establishment that lasted for weeks.
With his campaign exposed, his assets frozen, and federal indictments raining down on his co-conspirators, Vance attempted a desperate, unhinged retaliation. Realizing he had nothing left to lose, he tried to orchestrate a final, violent strike against the very people who had ruined him.
It happened on a cold, rainy Tuesday evening.
I was working late in my office on the 70th floor of the Ellison Tower, reviewing final audits of the recovered pension funds. Lily was playing quietly with Mr. Ears in the adjoining breakroom under the watchful eye of my personal security detail.
Suddenly, the overhead emergency lights flickered and died.
The deep, low thrum of the building’s power grid shutting down vibrated through the floorboards.
“What’s happening?” I stood up instantly, my heart jumping into my throat.
The security detail outside my door didn't answer. A dull thud echoed from the hallway, followed by the sound of heavy boots marching across the carpet.
Before I could reach the panic button on my desk, the heavy mahogany door swung open.
Standing in the doorway was Julian Vance.
He looked unhinged. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, his eyes wild and bloodshot. In his right hand, he held a heavy, silenced semi-automatic pistol. Behind him, two desperate-looking corporate mercenaries stood guard, having neutralized my security detail in the stairwell.
“Rosa,” Vance sneered, stepping into the office, locking the door behind him with a sharp click. “You just couldn't leave well enough alone, could you? You had to dig up graves that were meant to stay buried.”
I backed away slowly, my hands trembling, trying to shield the door to the breakroom where Lily was playing.
“Julian, you’re only making it worse,” I said, forcing my voice to remain steady. “The building is locked. Federal agents are already en route here. You can’t escape.”
“Escape?” Vance laughed hysterically, raising the pistol slightly. “I’m not trying to escape, Rosa. I’m tying up loose ends. If I’m going down, I’m taking you and your little brat down with me. Where is she? Is she playing with her stuffed rabbit while her mother ruins empires?”
He took a menacing step toward the breakroom door.
My maternal instincts overrode every shred of fear. I lunged forward, grabbing a heavy crystal paperweight off my desk and hurling it straight at his head.
Vance dodged it, but the distraction bought me precious seconds. He swung the barrel of the gun toward me, a vicious snarl twisting his face.
“You stupid bitch—!”
Before he could pull the trigger, the reinforced glass windows behind him suddenly shattered inward in an explosion of glittering shards.
Crash!
Darkness and rain poured into the office as a tactical rappel line dropped straight from the roof.
Before Vance could turn around, a dark, unstoppable force slammed into him from behind.
It was Marcus.
He had rappelled down seventy stories from the penthouse roof, smashing through the executive suite windows like a cinematic storm.
Marcus hit Vance with the force of a freight train, sending the pistol flying across the carpet. He pinned Vance to the floor with a knee to his chest, his fists hammering down with cold, controlled fury until Vance went completely limp, unconscious before he even hit the floor.
Marcus stood up slowly, breathing heavily, his hands bleeding slightly from the shattered glass, his suit jacket torn.
He didn't care about his clothes. His slate-gray eyes scanned the room frantically until they landed on me.
“Rosa!” Marcus shouted, crossing the distance in two strides and pulling me tightly into his arms, burying his face in my hair. “Are you alright? Did he touch you?”
“I’m fine,” I breathed, tears of relief finally spilling over my lashes as I clung to him. “I’m fine. Lily is safe in the breakroom.”
At that exact moment, the breakroom door pushed open, and Lily poked her head out, blinking sleepily at the shattered glass and the unconscious man on the floor.
“Mr. Marcus?” Lily asked innocently, holding up Mr. Ears. “Is it loud outside?”
May you like
Marcus walked over, scooped Lily up into his arms, and pulled both of us against his chest in an unbreakable embrace.
“It’s quiet now, Miss Lily,” Marcus whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “It’s very, very quiet.”
