Chapter 7 - The Day of Judgment

Six months later, I walked into the county courthouse for the final sentencing hearing. I carried Maya in a sling against my chest, her gentle breathing a steady rhythm against my heart.
Victor sat at the defense table, looking gaunt, defeated, and broken in his bright orange jumpsuit. Beside him, Helena and Raul looked like hollow shells of the arrogant tormentors who had once treated my pain like cheap entertainment.
When given the chance to address the court, Victor looked toward me, his voice cracking as he tried to perform a display of sudden remorse. "Sarah... I was sick... I was under stress... please, I still love you and our baby..."
The judge cut him off with a heavy strike of her gavel.
"Mr. Vance, your actions were not born of stress; they were born of pure malice and cruelty," the judge declared, her tone echoing with unyielding authority. "You abused a pregnant woman and showed a complete disregard for human life."

The sentences came down like thunderbolts: Victor received eighteen years in state prison without the possibility of early parole. Helena and Raul were each sentenced to five years for conspiracy, complicity, and felony financial fraud. As they were led away in chains, Nora sat in the gallery crying silently, disgraced and facing hundreds of hours of mandated community service.
I didn't watch them leave. I turned my back on the shadow of their downfall and walked out into the sunlight.
