Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

Within forty-eight hours, Victoria Sterling executed a masterclass in legal destruction.

While Victor and his parents sat in county jail awaiting their bail hearing, Victoria secured an emergency ex-parte freezing order on all shared bank accounts, as well as an immediate restraining order that prohibited any member of the Vance family from coming within five hundred feet of me or my child.

When Victoria dug into our financial history, she uncovered something even more sinister than domestic abuse.

Victor and his father had been systematically draining my late father’s trust fund—an inheritance meant to secure my future and my baby’s life—to fund Raul’s failing real estate venture. They hadn't just used me as a punching bag; they had viewed me as an endless piggy bank.

They thought you were weak, Sarah, Victoria said, spreading financial statements across my hospital table. They thought because you stayed quiet, you were unaware. But every contract Victor forged, every wire transfer Raul authorized without your signature constitutes grand larceny, wire fraud, and identity theft.

On the third day, the bail hearing took place. I insisted on being present.

Dressed in a clean navy dress that draped over my baby bump, I walked into the courtroom leaning lightly on Alex’s arm.

When Victor, Raul, and Helena were led in wearing orange jumpsuits and handcuffs, the sight satisfied something deep within my soul. Victor looked hollow. His hair was messy, his eyes bloodshot, and his arrogance was entirely gone. Helena looked terrified, her hands trembling as she sat beside her public defender.

Their lawyer attempted to request bail, arguing that Victor was a pillar of the community with no prior record.

That was when the prosecutor stood up and played the video recovered from Nora’s phone.

The courtroom fell into an appalling silence. Helena’s loud, hysterical laughter echoed through the speakers, followed by Victor’s roar, the sickening sound of the wooden stick striking my body, and my desperate pleas for the baby’s life.

I watched the judge’s face turn from neutral to utter disgust. She slammed her gavel down so hard the sound vibrated off the walls.

Bail is denied, the judge declared, her voice cold as ice. The court finds the defendants to be an extreme danger to society. They will remain in custody until trial.

Victor looked up at me from the defense table, his eyes wild with desperation. Sarah! Please! Tell them! I love you! Think of our family!

I stood tall, met his desperate gaze, and looked at him not with anger, but with complete indifference.

"You destroyed our family the moment you raised that stick," I said, clear enough for everyone in the room to hear. "Now, you pay."
