Chapter 6 - The Road to Healing

The private medical wing of the Callahan estate was quiet, bathed in the soft, warm glow of bedside lamps. Outside, the morning rain had tapered off into a gentle mist over the manicured lawns of Lake Forest, but inside, the air was still thick with the lingering scent of antiseptic, clean cotton, and unspoken emotions.
Dr. Harrison, the Callahan family’s private physician, finished wrapping the fresh white bandages around Caleb’s torso. Seventeen months of brutal captivity, poor nutrition, and physical abuse had taken a severe toll on Caleb’s body. He had lost thirty pounds, suffered three cracked ribs, and bore thick, pale scars across his wrists where the steel chains had rubbed against his skin for over a year.
Yet, as Dr. Harrison packed up his black bag and quietly stepped out of the room, Caleb didn't look like a defeated man. His blue eyes were bright, focused entirely on the small bundle sleeping peacefully in the crib beside his bed.
Emma sat in the armchair next to him, her fingers laced tightly with his. Her heart was fuller than it had been in two years, but her soul was still trembling from the shock of everything that had transpired in forty-eight hours.
"She has your chin, you know," Emma whispered softly, her thumb gently tracing the back of Caleb’s knuckles. "And when she’s mad, she wrinkles her nose the exact same way you do."
Caleb turned his head slowly, his breath hitching in his chest. He looked at Emma—really looked at her—taking in the subtle lines of exhaustion around her eyes, the resilience that had hardened her once-fragile shoulders, and the pure, unconditional love shining in her gaze.
"I missed every milestone, Em," Caleb rasped, his voice rough from months of disuse. "Her first smile. Her first crawl. Her first tooth. I left you in that tiny apartment with no money, no help, no idea if I was dead or alive. How can you even look at me without hating me?"
Emma leaned forward, placing her hand gently over his heart, feeling its steady, strong rhythm.
"I cried every single night for a year, Caleb," she confessed, her voice shaking slightly. "I thought you didn't want us. I thought I wasn't enough to make you stay. But then Roman showed me the truth. You sacrificed your own freedom to keep Victor Vance away from us. You suffered in that dark room for seventeen months so Lily and I could breathe."
She leaned down and pressed a long, tender kiss against his bruised cheek. "You didn't abandon us, Caleb. You protected us. There is nothing to forgive."
A single, hot tear spilled over Caleb’s lashes, tracking through the stubble on his face. He pulled Emma closer, burying his face into the crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet, familiar scent of lavender and soap that had haunted his dreams every night in captivity.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the warm light of the hallway, Roman watched them in silence.
He had removed his tactical vest and rolled up his sleeves, carrying a tray with fresh broth, warm tea, and a plate of fruit. For seventeen months, Roman had operated like a machine—cold, ruthless, and driven entirely by guilt. But seeing his younger brother holding his wife and child in a safe room, Roman felt the icy armor around his heart finally begin to melt away.
Roman stepped into the room, his heavy leather shoes silent on the rug. He set the tray on the side table.
"Gideon secured the perimeter," Roman said quietly, his dark gray eyes moving over Caleb’s bandaged chest. "The federal prosecutors have officially processed Victor Vance. The evidence on that encryption drive is staggering, Caleb. They’re tying Vance to federal racketeering, arms trafficking, three unsolved homicides, and kidnapping."
Caleb looked up at his older brother, a faint, weary smile appearing on his mouth. "So it's really over? He's never getting out?"
"He will spend the rest of his natural life inside a maximum-security federal penitentiary," Roman affirmed, his voice absolute and cold as iron. "His network is being dismantled as we speak. Every politician, judge, and enforcer on his payroll is being rounded up by the FBI. You, Emma, and Lily are completely safe."
Caleb reached out a weak hand toward Roman. Roman stepped closer, grasping his brother’s forearm in a firm, unbreakable grip.
"Thank you, Roman," Caleb whispered. "For finding me. For bringing me back. But most of all... for taking care of my family when I couldn't."
May you like
Roman looked at Emma, then down at tiny Lily, who gave a soft, snuffling breath in her sleep.
"They're Callahans," Roman said softly, his chest tightening with an unfamiliar warmth. "They were always family. Now rest, Caleb. You're home."
