Chapter 4 - The Circle Closes

The Callahan estate sat behind a ten-foot wrought-iron fence in the exclusive enclave of Lake Forest, surrounded by ancient oak trees and monitored by state-of-the-art security cameras.
For two weeks, Emma and Lily had lived in the east wing of the massive stone mansion.
It was a world entirely foreign to Emma. Silk carpets, marble fireplaces, personal chefs, and round-the-clock security guards who moved through the grounds like silent shadows. Yet, despite the opulent surroundings, Roman never made her feel like a prisoner or a charity case.
Every evening at precisely 7:00 p.m., no matter how busy his corporate empire was, Roman returned home.
He would shed his designer suit jacket, roll up his French cuffs, and sit on the plush rug in the grand living room, allowing ten-month-old Lily to climb over his lap, drag his expensive silk ties, and babble happily in her baby language.
Watching the formidable billionaire soften in the presence of his tiny niece filled Emma with a warmth she hadn't felt in over a year.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, while Lily was napping upstairs under the watchful eye of a professional nurse Roman had hired, Emma walked into the estate's private library.
She held a small, weathered leather box in her hands—something she had pulled from the very bottom of her oldest suitcase.
Roman was sitting at his dark mahogany desk, reviewing financial reports on a tablet. He looked up the moment she entered, setting his tablet aside.
"Is Lily asleep?" he asked, a rare, soft smile touching his lips.
"Fast asleep," Emma said softly. She walked toward his desk and placed the small leather box directly on the blotter before him.
Roman looked at the box, then at her. "What’s this?"
"Caleb gave it to me three days before he vanished," Emma explained, her voice quiet. "He told me it contained his old union papers and some spare cash. He said if anything ever happened to him, I was to keep it locked in a safe deposit box and never open it unless I was in absolute desperation."
Roman’s eyes sharpened. He reached out and touched the tarnished brass lock of the box.
"You never opened it?"
"I didn't have the heart," Emma confessed, sitting in the leather chair across from him. "Every time I looked at it, it felt like admitting he wasn't coming back. But after what you told me about Vance... I wondered."
Roman pulled a small pocket knife from his desk drawer, inserted the thin blade into the old lock, and applied gentle pressure.
Snap.
The lock gave way.
Roman opened the lid. Inside lay a roll of hundred-dollar bills, a small silver baby rattle Caleb had bought at a flea market, and beneath them, wrapped in oilcloth, a silver USB drive and a folded, yellowed piece of paper.
Roman picked up the USB drive, his hands visibly shaking. "This is it," he whispered. "This is Vance’s encrypted master drive."
He unfolded the paper. It was covered in Caleb’s frantic, familiar handwriting:
Roman, If you’re reading this, it means I failed, and you found Emma. Protect her, brother. She is my whole heart. The drive contains everything on Vance—his offshore accounts, his bribery lists, his human trafficking routes. But don't use it until you find me. Vance didn't kill me. He can't kill me until he gets the master key code that’s hardwired into my memory. He’s keeping me alive in the old meatpacking plant on 47th Street. Come get me, brother. Bring the thunder.
Emma gasped, rising from her chair, her hands clutching her chest. "He’s alive? Oh God, Roman... Caleb is alive!"
Roman stood up slowly. The air in the room seemed to contract around him. The grief, the guilt, the dark despair that had haunted his eyes for seventeen long months vanished instantly, replaced by a blinding, terrifying fire of vengeance.
He picked up the silver USB drive and slipped it into his pocket.
"He’s alive," Roman growled softly, a lethal smile touching his lips. "Gideon!" he roared toward the open library door.
Within seconds, his head of security rushed into the room. "Sir?"
"Call the team," Roman commanded, his voice cold, dark, and absolute. "Get the tactical unit ready. We’re going to 47th Street. And tell Federal Agent Miller that I have the evidence to sink Victor Vance for the rest of his natural life."
"Understood, Mr. Callahan!" Gideon turned and sprinted down the hall.
Emma stepped around the desk, grabbing Roman’s arm, her eyes wide with fear and desperate hope. "Roman... please be careful. Bring him home."

Roman looked down at Emma. He reached out, his hand gently cupping the side of her neck, his thumbs wiping away the tears spilling down her cheeks.
"He protected you for seventeen months, Emma," Roman whispered fiercely. "Now it’s my turn to bring your husband home to his daughter."
