Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

Six months later.

The State Superior Courtroom was packed to capacity for the sentencing hearing of State v. Victor Hale.

Victor sat at the defense table wearing a orange jump suit, his hands manacled to a waist chain. His hair was short, his posture slouched, his arrogant demeanor completely eroded by six months in county detention awaiting trial.

Beside him sat his public defender—his high-priced legal team having abandoned him months ago when his retainer checks bounced.

In the second row of the gallery sat Lorraine, wearing a plain black dress, sitting completely alone. Not a single friend, former neighbor, or social acquaintance sat near her. She was a pariah in the city she had once sought to rule.

I sat in the front row beside Emily, holding her hand tightly.

Judge Sterling adjusted his glasses and looked down from the bench at the written jury verdict.

"Mr. Hale," Judge Sterling boomed, his voice echoing off the high wood-paneled walls. "A jury of your peers has found you guilty on all counts: two counts of Grand Larceny, three counts of Corporate Wire Fraud, one count of Insurance Fraud, and one count of Felony Witness Tampering."

Victor didn't look up. He stared blankly at the mahogany table.

"In my long career," Judge Sterling continued, "I have observed many individuals who turned to crime out of desperation or hardship. You, however, acted out of pure, unadulterated greed and malice. You weaponized affection, forged documents, stole from the woman who trusted you, and humiliated her in public without an ounce of remorse."

Judge Sterling picked up his pen, signing the formal order.

"It is the sentence of this court that you serve twelve years in the State Department of Corrections without the possibility of parole for the first eight years. Furthermore, you are ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $1.2 million to Emily Vance, to be satisfied through the immediate forfeiture of all personal and corporate assets."

BANG!

The gavel struck the block.

A sharp gasp went through the courtroom gallery.

Lorraine covered her face with her hands, letting out a silent, breaking sob.

Victor was stood up by two court officers. As he was led toward the side exit leading to the holding cells, he turned his head and looked at Emily one last time.

His eyes were filled with an overwhelming, pathetic question: How did this happen?

Emily looked back at him. She didn't glare. She didn't scowl. She simply looked at him with the quiet, peaceful indifference of a woman who had completely reclaimed her soul.

Victor was pushed through the metal doors, and the heavy lock clicked shut behind him forever.
