Chapter 6 - The Emergency Custody & Asset Seizure

On Friday morning, the County Courthouse sat wrapped in a heavy grey mist.
For twenty-seven years, I had walked up those granite steps in my judicial robes. Today, I walked up them wearing a dark navy dress, holding my daughter's hand as her legal advisor.
Room 402 was packed with reporters, financial auditors, and curious members of the public.
Victor sat at the defense table beside a high-priced criminal defense attorney named Ronald Vance (no relation to us), looking pale, emaciated, and terrified. Beside him sat Lorraine, wearing a dark veil over her face to hide from the flashing news cameras outside.
At the head of the courtroom sat Judge Robert Sterling—a former colleague of mine, known throughout the state for his zero-tolerance policy toward domestic financial abuse and perjury.
"We are here today on the emergency petition of Emily Vance-Hale for full asset freeze, immediate dissolution of marital property, and civil protection orders," Judge Sterling announced, his gravelly voice booming through the silent courtroom.
Victor's attorney stood up immediately. "Your Honor! My client is being subjected to a witch hunt orchestrated by his mother-in-law, a former member of this very bench! They have seized his home, ruined his business, and published private family footage online to destroy his standing!"
"Mr. Vance," Judge Sterling interrupted, raising a thick eyebrow over his reading glasses. "I have reviewed the security video from the restaurant. I have also reviewed the forensic audit provided by the State Crimes Division. Is it your contention that the video footage of your client telling his wife to 'bow' is fabricated?"
The attorney swallowed hard. "No, Your Honor, but—"
"Is it your contention that the fourteen-thousand-dollar jewelry charge on Mrs. Hale's personal account was authorized?"
"My client believed it was a joint account—"
"A joint account from which he withdrew three hundred thousand dollars to fund an offshore entity registered to his mother?" Judge Sterling’s voice lowered into a terrifying rumble. "Do not test my patience today, counselor."
Judge Sterling turned his gaze toward Victor, who flinched under the magistrate's cold stare.
"Mr. Hale," Sterling said, leaning forward. "In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a case of such systematic, arrogant, and cruel financial and emotional subjugation. You did not marry this young woman to build a life. You married her to bleed her dry while treating her like a servant in her own home."
Victor gripped the edge of the table, his knuckles turning white. "Your Honor... I loved her! I made a mistake!"
"You made a series of deliberate criminal choices," Sterling corrected him flatly. "Effective immediately:
All assets held under the names of Victor Hale, Hale Financial Group, and Lorraine Hale's boutique are placed under permanent state receivership.
A full protective order is issued prohibiting Victor Hale and Lorraine Hale from coming within one thousand yards of Emily Vance or Margaret Vance.
The defendant is ordered to surrender his passport immediately pending grand jury indictment on felony grand larceny charges."
BANG!
The gavel struck the block.
Lorraine let out a sharp, choked shriek from behind her veil. Victor collapsed back into his leather chair, staring blankly at the ceiling as two county bailiffs stepped up behind him to secure his wrists in heavy steel handcuffs.

Emily sat beside me at the plaintiff’s table. She didn't cheer. She didn't smile.
She simply closed her eyes, let out a deep, cleansing breath, and felt the heavy, suffocating weight that had crushed her chest for five long years melt away into nothing.
