Chapter 6 - The Ambush at the Office

Thursday afternoon, the glass-walled conference room on the top floor of Reyes Enterprises was quiet.

Michael and I were reviewing structural engineering reports when the heavy oak doors banged open.

Dolores stormed into the room, her face flushed with rage, trailed closely by a frantic-looking Sofia.

“Michael!” Dolores yelled, marching straight toward the glass desk. “What is the meaning of this? The bank froze my accounts! My cards are being declined at the club! And some rude man delivered a certified legal letter to my house demanding an inventory of the estate!”

Michael didn't look up from his tablet immediately. He finished reading a paragraph, tapped the screen to lock it, and slowly raised his eyes to look at his mother.

“It’s called a financial audit, Mother,” Michael said coldly. “For the last five years, you’ve treated my earnings as your personal slush fund while treating my wife like garbage.”

Sofia stepped forward, her expression a mix of outrage and disbelief. “Michael, are you out of your mind? You’re freezing Mom’s accounts over a family disagreement? Over her?” She pointed a shaking finger at me.

I stood up slowly from my chair, smoothing down my blazer. I didn't cower. I didn't shrink away. I looked Sofia dead in the eye—the same woman who had smiled while her mother-in-law degraded me for sport.

“Keep your finger to yourself, Sofia,” I said, my voice carrying a quiet authority that made her instantly step back. “You’ve spent three years hiding behind Dolores’s skirt while mocking my lack of children and my career sacrifices. That era is over.”

Dolores gasped, clutching her pearls. “You speak to your sister-in-law with respect in this office! You ungrateful, barren—”

“Stop,” Michael roared, slamming his palm against the conference table.

The sound echoed off the glass walls, shaking the room into absolute silence.

“If you ever use that word to describe my wife again,” Michael said, rising to his full height and towering over his mother, “I will strip you of every last cent, sell the estate from underneath you, and you can spend your golden years living in a studio apartment in Queens.”

Dolores stared at her son, her chest heaving. For the first time in her life, she realized that the boy she had raised and manipulated no longer existed. In his place was a man who had chosen his partner over her tyranny.

“You’re cutting off your own family for an outsider,” Dolores whispered, her voice cracking with bitter defeat.

“No,” Michael corrected quietly, stepping beside me and wrapping his arm around my waist. “I spent thirty years in a family that treated people like property. I finally found my real home.”

He picked up a second document from the desk and slid it across to his mother.

“You have thirty days to vacate the estate,” Michael said. “The property is being sold. Enjoy your independence.”
