Chapter 3 - The Weight of Silence

The drive back to our apartment was silent, save for the hum of the tires against the highway.

I sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window at the blurred city lights, my thumb rhythmically tracing the stinging spot on my cheek. The adrenaline that had sustained me through the shock of the slap was fading, leaving behind a hollow, aching exhaustion.

When we finally unlocked the door to our small, sunlit two-bedroom apartment—a modest place compared to the sprawling Reyes estate, but entirely ours—Michael dropped our keys on the entryway table and pulled me into his arms.

He buried his face in my hair, and for the first time since we had met, I felt his shoulders shake.

“I’m so sorry,” he whispered, his voice cracking. “I’m so, so sorry, Clara. I thought if I just kept the peace... if I just absorbed the blows for you, it would get better. I was a coward.”

I rested my forehead against his chest, listening to the rapid, heavy thud of his heart. The anger that had been simmering inside me for years didn't vanish, but it shifted, turning from bitter resentment into a quiet, unbreakable resolve.

“You aren't a coward, Michael,” I murmured, my voice raspy. “You stood up to her tonight. When it mattered.”

“It took her hitting you for me to do it,” he said, pulling back to look at me, his eyes filled with self-loathing. “That makes me a fool.”

“We left,” I said, looking around our clean, peaceful living room—no heavy velvet drapes, no ancestral portraits glaring down from the walls, no expectations to fulfill. “We’re out.”

My phone buzzed on the counter. Then it buzzed again. And again.

Sofia. Uncle Roberto. A long text message from Dolores demanding Michael return to “fix this mess” immediately.

Michael walked over, picked up his phone, and with a swift, definitive motion, powered it off. He laid it flat on the counter.

“We’re turning a new page,” he said softly.

That night, for the first time in three years, I slept without setting an alarm for 5:00 AM to prep a Sunday roast for people who hated me.
