Chapter 9 - The Real Family

One year later.

It was a gorgeous, warm autumn afternoon in Paradise Valley.

Our backyard was filled with the joyful sounds of laughter, clinking glasses, and acoustic guitar music playing softly through the outdoor speakers.

We were hosting a charity gala and celebration for the opening of the Irene Wentworth Foundation for Maternal Safety—a non-profit organization we had founded to provide emergency legal aid, secure housing, and medical care for victims of domestic abuse and family exploitation across Arizona.

Over fifty guests gathered on the terrace—our close friends, Dr. Thorne, Marcus Sterling and his family, Detective Vance, and several brave women who had been helped by Irene’s foundation.

At the center of the lawn, fifteen-month-old Clara was taking her confident, wobbly steps across the grass, giggling wildly as she chased a golden retriever puppy we had adopted two months prior.

Irene stood beside me near the outdoor fireplace, wearing an elegant emerald green dress that complemented her glowing skin. Her hair hung in soft, dark waves over her shoulders, and she held a glass of sparkling cider.

Marcus walked up to us, holding a glass of champagne, raising it in a toast.

“To the Wentworths,” Marcus smiled broadly. “To truth, justice, and the strongest couple I know.”

“To family,” Detective Vance added, stepping up beside Marcus. “The real kind.”

We clinked our glasses together as warm laughter echoed across the terrace.

Later that evening, after the guests had departed and Clara had been tucked safely into her crib for the night, Irene and I walked out onto the balcony of our home, looking out at the magnificent sunset painting the Arizona mountains in shades of purple, crimson, and bright gold.

I stood behind Irene, wrapping my arms around her waist, resting my chin gently on her shoulder. The cool desert breeze rustled through the palm trees below.

“Are you happy, my love?” I whispered into her hair.

Irene leaned back against my chest, covering my hands with hers, looking out at the horizon with absolute peace in her eyes.

“I am complete, Austin,” she said softly, her voice filled with a quiet, unshakeable strength. “We lost a lot of blood along the way... but we built something unbreakable.”

I closed my eyes, pulling her closer against my heart, listening to the calm, steady rhythm of her breathing.

The monsters of our past were locked away behind iron bars, forgotten by the world they had tried to steal from. But here, in the warm golden light of our home, love had conquered greed, justice had prevailed, and our true story had only just begun.
