Chapter 4 - What Was in the Safe

By 8:00 a.m. the following morning, while Irene was resting under the care of a private security detail I had hired to guard her hospital room, I returned to our Paradise Valley residence accompanied by my chief legal counsel, Marcus Sterling.
Marcus was a former federal prosecutor turned elite defense and corporate litigator—a tall man with sharp gray eyes and an unyielding reputation in Arizona courtrooms.
The bedroom was still marked with police tape. The heavy wall safe in my study sat partially cracked, its steel electronic panel crushed by Carla’s hammer attacks.
“The police forensics team cleared the room three hours ago,” Marcus said, pulling on latex gloves as he examined the scene. “They logged the open suitcase as primary evidence of grand larceny and robbery. But we need to inspect what was inside that safe before your mother’s civil defense attorney tries to claim joint ownership.”
I walked over to the safe. Carla’s hammer had ruined the electronic keypad, but she hadn't realized that behind the bottom decorative plate lay an analog mechanical key bypass—a secret known only to me.
I pulled out a small brass key from my ring, inserted it into the hidden keyhole, turned it counter-clockwise, and pulled the heavy steel door open.
Inside lay three thick manila envelopes that Margaret and Carla hadn't been able to reach.
I pulled them out and laid them across my desk. Marcus leant over my shoulder as I unsealed the first envelope.
Inside was a series of forged documents drafted six months ago.
My breath caught in my throat.
It was a fraudulent Power of Attorney document, bearing a forged copy of my signature, granting Margaret full administrative rights over my personal bank accounts, my real estate holdings, and my 45% founder’s share in Wentworth Logistics Solutions in the event of my "incapacitation or sudden death."
Underneath the Power of Attorney was a secondary document: a pre-drafted irrevocable trust agreement transferring 100% of my estate into a private holding account controlled exclusively by Carla Wentworth, explicitly excluding my wife, Irene, and any future children born to our marriage.
“My God,” Marcus breathed, taking the papers with gloved hands and reading through the legal jargon. “Austin... this wasn't an impulse crime. This was a premeditated corporate takeover.”
“Look at the date,” I said, my voice dropping an octave. “This was drafted the exact week Irene told us she was pregnant.”
Marcus flipped to the last page of the third envelope. Inside were bank statements belonging to Carla.
It revealed that my sister had built up over $1.8 million in illegal offshore gambling debts in Macau and the Cayman Islands over the past two years. Loan sharks were threatening her, and Margaret had concocted a scheme to strip my entire net worth to save her favorite child while tossing my pregnant wife out onto the street.
“They didn't just want the cash and gold in the study tonight, Marcus,” I said, staring at the forged signatures. “If I had taken that flight to London... what was supposed to happen to me?”
Marcus looked at me solemnly. “A four-day trip over the Atlantic. An sudden 'accident' in a foreign city, or a staged medical emergency... with these forged documents already in their hands, Margaret would have seized control of your empire before your plane even landed back in Phoenix.”
A cold chill ran down my spine. The betrayal wasn't just physical violence against Irene; it was an absolute, cold-blooded execution plot.
“Marcus,” I said, turning to my attorney. “I want every asset, every account, every trust fund I ever set up for my mother and sister revoked immediately. I want the deed to Margaret’s condo in Scottsdale foreclosed. I want Carla’s trust allowance frozen to zero.”
“Consider it done,” Marcus replied smoothly. “And what about the criminal trial?”

I looked out the window at the sunny Arizona landscape, my hands clenching into tight fists.
“I don't want a plea deal,” I said. “I want maximum sentences in a state penitentiary. I want them to realize that the family they tried to destroy was the only thing keeping them out of hell.”
