Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Secrets

Before leaving the estate, Alessandro needed to verify Rosa’s letter.

He walked quietly up the grand staircase, moving down the carpeted hallway until he reached the nursery. Pushing the door open with a soft click, he stepped inside.

The room was bathed in a gentle blue nightlight. Little Lucas was sleeping soundly, curled up on his side, clutching his wooden horse tightly against his chest. A faint smile graced the boy’s sleeping face.

Alessandro’s chest tightened with a fierce, protective ache. He gently adjusted the blanket over his son’s shoulders before turning toward the corner of the room.

There it was: a large, hand-painted wooden toy chest shaped like a pirate ship.

Kneeling down, Alessandro lifted the heavy lid. Inside were wooden blocks, stuffed animals, and storybooks. He cleared them away, reaching down to press his fingers against the wooden floorboards at the base of the chest.

With a soft click, a hidden latch released.

The false bottom slid upward, revealing a hidden compartment lined in black velvet.

Inside sat a thick, leather-bound ledger, its pages yellowed with age, alongside a heavy stack of digital storage drives and documents. Alessandro picked up the ledger and flipped it open.

The names stared back at him in neat, precise handwriting: federal judges, district attorneys, police captains, and city councilmen—all on the Moretti payroll, detailing every bribe, every payoff, and every suppressed investigation for the past twenty years.

If this ledger fell into federal hands, the entire Moretti empire would crumble overnight, and Alessandro would spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Rosa had possessed the ultimate weapon against him all along. She could have destroyed him at any moment during the past three years. Instead, she had kept it hidden, protecting him, loving him, and guarding his secrets with her life.

And now, she was paying the price for that loyalty.

Alessandro closed the ledger, sliding it securely inside his tactical vest. He stood up, cast one last protective glance at his sleeping son, and walked out of the room.

The time for diplomacy was over. The time for mercy had expired.
