Chapter 2 - The Sealed Confession

The heavy oak doors of the private study clicked shut, sealing out the whispers of the guards and the distant rumble of thunder. The room smelled of old leather, expensive bourbon, and ozone.
At the center of the mahogany desk sat the crumpled envelope.
In the dim, amber light of a single desk lamp, Alessandro Moretti looked like a statue carved from granite. His broad shoulders were tense beneath a custom-tailored black shirt, his sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with muscle and old, jagged scars from a life soaked in blood.
Marco Vance, his second-in-command and closest confidant for over a decade, stood near the door, his hands clasped behind his back.
"Boss," Marco said cautiously, breaking the heavy silence. "Do you want me to have forensics analyze the paper first? It could be laced with contact poison, or—"
"No," Alessandro interrupted, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that brooked no argument. "It’s from Rosa."
"She’s been missing for less than an hour, Alessandro. How did she know?"
"Rosa knew more than anyone ever gave her credit for," Alessandro murmured.
His large, calloused fingers reached out and gently picked up the envelope. The paper was slightly damp from the rain, smelling faintly of the lavender soap she always used. He slid a silver letter opener beneath the flap and broke the seal.
Inside was a single sheet of heavy cream-colored stationery, folded twice.
Alessandro unfolded it. Her handwriting was neat, elegant, yet hurried, as if written in the dead of night while someone slept beside her.
Alessandro,
If you are reading this, it means the worst has happened, and I did not come back to the estate. For three years, I have lived in your shadow, safe beneath your name. But my past has finally caught up to us.
They didn't take me because I am Rosa Mendes, the quiet woman who cooks in your kitchen and raises your son. They took me because I am Victoria Rossi—the daughter of the man your syndicate eliminated in Chicago seven years ago.
I came to your world for revenge, Alessandro. I watched you, I planned, I waited for the exact moment to strike. But then... I fell in love with you. And I gave you Lucas. The moment I chose to stay, I signed my own death warrant. Someone in your inner circle found out who I really am. They sold my location to the Santoro family.
The ledger containing the names of every corrupt federal judge on your payroll isn't in your wall safe. It’s hidden in the false bottom of Lucas’s toy chest. Use it to find the traitor before they use it to destroy you.
Protect our son. Keep him safe from the fire I brought to your door.
Yours, even in death, Rosa.
The paper fluttered from Alessandro’s fingers, drifting down onto the mahogany desk like a fallen leaf.
For a long, agonizing moment, the air in the room seemed to freeze. Alessandro didn't move. He didn't breathe. The woman he loved—the mother of his child, the gentle soul who softened the brutal edges of his empire—had a past stained with blood and vengeance. She had come to destroy him, only to be consumed by an even greater force: love.
And now, she was gone. Kidnapped by the Santoros. Sold out by a rat living under his own roof.
Marco watched his boss closely, noting the sudden, terrifying shift in Alessandro’s posture. The cold fury radiating from the syndicate boss was enough to make veteran killers shudder.
"Boss?" Marco asked softly. "What does it say?"

Alessandro raised his head. His slate-gray eyes were devoid of all human warmth, burning with a lethal, crystalline focus.
"She wasn't who she said she was, Marco," Alessandro said, his voice flat, dangerous, and completely steady. "And someone in this house just signed their own death warrant."
