Chapter 8 - The Queen’s Throne

Six months after the trial.
The golden hour sun flooded through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the newly minted headquarters of Osei Tech Innovations. The penthouse office—formerly Silas’s ostentatious, cold display of greed—had been completely redesigned into a warm, modern sanctuary of glass, light, and mahogany.
I stood behind a massive curved executive desk, signing the final papers for the acquisition of a European clean-energy defense network.
Chloe, my best friend who had stepped into the role of Executive Vice President, entered the room holding two cups of fresh organic coffee.
“The stock market closed twenty minutes ago, Nadia,” Chloe smiled brightly, setting a cup on my desk. “Osei Tech Innovations reached an all-time high valuation of four point two billion dollars. We are officially the highest-performing tech firm in the Midwest.”
“And the foundation?” I asked, looking up from my tablet.
“The Aurelia Grace Refuge Network opened its doors in Chicago and Detroit this morning,” Chloe reported proudly. “We’ve already provided safe, high-security housing, legal aid, and medical care to over two hundred mothers escaping domestic abuse.”
I smiled, feeling a deep, quiet warmth spread through my chest. The pain of that dark hospital room had been transformed into a lighthouse that was saving hundreds of lives across the country.
A soft knock came at the door, and my father walked in, wearing his comfortable charcoal suit, holding ten-month-old Aurelia on his hip. Aurelia was laughing happily, pulling playfully at Marcus’s silver hair, while the legendary underground boss—the man who commanded private armies across three continents—smiled like a besotted grandfather.
“She just learned how to clap her hands, Nadia,” Marcus said, his dark eyes sparkling with genuine joy as he set Aurelia down on a soft plush play mat near my desk.
“She gets her energy from you, Dad,” I laughed, walking over to join them on the rug.
Marcus sat down in an armchair, watching Aurelia play with a set of wooden building blocks.
“I spoke with Gideon this morning,” Marcus said casually, taking a sip of coffee. “Silas Vance’s third petition for a prison transfer was denied by the warden. He’s currently assigned to the facility’s metal shop in downstate Illinois.”
I looked up at my father. “How is he handling it?”
Marcus let out a soft, dry chuckle. “Let’s just say he’s learning what hard work actually feels like. He spends ten hours a day cleaning grease off diesel engine parts.”
I laughed aloud—a clean, cathartic sound that bounced off the glass walls. The arrogant executive who had looked down on my father as an "aging mechanic" was now spending his life cleaning grease off engine blocks in a federal prison.
There was a profound, poetic justice in the universe.
“And Odalys?” I asked.
“Her petition for protective custody was rejected,” Marcus replied quietly. “She is serving her time in general population. She won't be bothering anyone for a very long time.”
Marcus leaned forward, pulling a velvet box from his jacket pocket and setting it on my desk.
“What’s this, Dad?” I asked.
I opened the box. Inside lay a stunning platinum signet ring, custom-crafted to mirror my father’s obsidian ring, but centered around a brilliant, glowing sapphire flanked by gold lightning bolts.
“This is your official seal as co-commander of Osei Global Logistics,” Marcus said, his voice thick with deep, unconditional pride. “I spent twenty years hiding my world from you, Nadia, because I wanted to protect your purity. But you proved that you possess a strength greater than any army I command. You reclaimed your company, you protected your child, and you stood unbroken against evil.”
I picked up the ring, feeling the heavy, cool metal in my palm. I slipped it onto my index finger. It fitted perfectly.

“I’m proud to carry your name, Dad,” I said softly, looking into his eyes.
“And I am honored to be your father,” Marcus replied.
