Chapter 3 - The Custody Battle Begins

The fallout was swift. Sarah was escorted from the property that evening after receiving a temporary restraining order and a citation for child endangerment. But if I thought the battle was over, I was mistaken.

Three days later, I received a court summons. Backed by Ryan Vance’s extensive legal team, Sarah was filing for full emergency custody of Tessa and Miles, claiming I was an unfit father whose high-risk job with working dogs created an unsafe environment for children.

My attorney, David Miller—a straightforward family law veteran in downtown Oklahoma City—sat across from me in his office, reviewing the filing.

"They're playing dirty, Grant," David said, setting the papers down. "Vance has deep pockets. They're trying to paint your training facility as a dangerous hazard and frame Sarah’s departure as a 'temporary lapse under stress.'"

"She left them alone for four hours," I said, my fists clenching beneath the desk. "Tessa was terrified."

"I know," David said calmly. "And we have the phone logs, the text messages, and the police report. But in custody hearings, judges look at long-term stability. We need to prove that your home is the absolute best place for these kids, and we need to dismantle Ryan Vance’s financial interference piece by piece."

Over the next month, I poured every ounce of energy into my children and my work. I restructured my training schedule so I was always home before school let out. My loyal clients—many of them law enforcement officers and local families—flocked to support us, providing character references and standing by my business.

Meanwhile, Tessa began seeing a child counselor named Dr. Aris, who helped her process the trauma of that afternoon. During their sessions, Tessa made it clear that she felt safe with me, but terrified of being forced to live with her mother and Ryan.

When the preliminary custody hearing arrived, Ryan Vance sat in the back row of the gallery in a tailored suit, looking confident. Sarah sat beside her high-priced lawyer, pretending to be a distraught, devoted mother.

Her attorney took the stand first, presenting fabricated testimonies alleging that my German Shepherds were aggressive and unpredictable.

"Mr. Reynolds runs a commercial kennel on the property where these young children live," Sarah's lawyer argued dramatically. "It poses an ongoing threat to an eight-month-old infant and a young girl."

When it was our turn, David stood up calmly. He didn't argue about dogs. He presented the call logs from the afternoon Sarah left. He presented the recorded statement from the responding deputy. And then, he called Dr. Aris to the stand.

Dr. Aris testified clearly and impartially: "Tessa Reynolds exhibits high levels of anxiety regarding her mother due to repeated instances of parentification and neglect. She views her father as her primary emotional protector. Separating her from Mr. Reynolds would cause severe psychological harm."

The judge’s expression hardened as she reviewed the evidence. She turned her eyes toward Sarah and her legal team.

"Leaving an infant under the care of a nine-year-old to pursue personal engagements is a severe breach of parental duty," the judge stated firmly. "Temporary sole physical and legal custody is granted immediately to the father, Grant Reynolds. The mother is permitted supervised visitation twice a week at a certified facility."

Sarah gasped, turning to Ryan in shock, but Ryan merely adjusted his tie and looked away, already realizing he was losing control of the narrative.
