Chapter 6 - The CPS Ambush

The red and blue emergency lights of three county sheriff cruisers flashed against the wrought-iron gates of the Ridge Estate.

Beside the cruisers stood two women in sharp gray business suits holding clipboard folders, accompanied by four armed deputies.

I walked down the paved driveway alone, flanked only by Marcus and my chief legal counsel, Arthur Vance, whom I had flown in by helicopter thirty minutes earlier.

The lead CPS investigator—a stern woman named Agent Miller—stepped forward, holding up a laminated badge.

"Ethan Whitaker?" Agent Miller demanded. "We received a high-priority tip from the Manhattan Family Court division alleging that four young children—Milo, Mason, Max, and Micah Lin—were removed from the city without legal parental consent and are currently being held in an unsafe, high-risk environment."

I stopped at the gate, resting my hands casually in my suit pockets.

"An unsafe environment?" I asked, my voice laced with dark irony. "You are standing outside a private three-hundred-acre secured estate equipped with a full-time medical staff, private tutors, and twenty-four-hour security."

"Sir," the county sheriff stepped forward, touching the holster of his sidearm. "The report claims the mother of the children, Mara Lin, was coerced into bringing them here by force."

"That is a bold, fabricated lie," Arthur Vance stepped forward, sliding a leather-bound legal document through the iron bars of the gate. "I am Arthur Vance, lead counsel for Whitaker Enterprises. This is a sworn affidavit signed by Mara Lin less than one hour ago, confirming her voluntary residence at this address, along with her certified custody documentation."

Agent Miller took the document, her brow furrowing as she scanned the notarized pages.

"Furthermore," Arthur continued, his voice sharp as a razor, "this folder contains four certified DNA paternity panels completed by a state-accredited medical facility, establishing Mr. Ethan Whitaker as the biological father of all four children. As the biological father with no existing custody orders restricting his rights, Mr. Whitaker has full legal authority to house his children on his private property."

Agent Miller’s face stiffened. She looked at the sheriff, then back at me.

"Mr. Whitaker," she said, trying to maintain her authoritative posture, "the complaint was filed directly by Mrs. Eleanor Whitaker and Miss Brielle Cartwright. They claim the mother is unfit and that you are suffering from a psychological breakdown."

A cold, dangerous smile spread across my lips.

"My mother and Miss Cartwright filed a false government report to harass my family," I said, stepping right up to the iron gate, staring down the investigator. "Agent Miller, if you and your deputies step one foot onto this private property without a signed judicial warrant from a state supreme court judge, my legal team will file personal civil rights lawsuits against your department and every officer present before midnight."

The sheriff swallowed hard. He looked at the massive security cameras mounted on the stone pillars, then at Arthur Vance's gleaming gold cufflinks. He knew a unwinnable corporate nightmare when he saw one.

"Ma'am," the sheriff whispered to Agent Miller. "The paperwork is clean. The mother signed it. We don't have a warrant."

Agent Miller snapped her clipboard shut, her face flushed with embarrassment and anger.

"This isn't over, Mr. Whitaker," she warned. "Family court will hear this case."

"I look forward to it," I replied coldly. "Have a safe drive back to the city."

As the police cruisers turned around and drove away down the dark mountain road, Arthur Vance turned to me with a grim expression.

"They're throwing everything at you, Ethan," Arthur said. "Eleanor is using every judge, politician, and media contact in her rolodex. She wants to break Mara's spirit in court before you can formalize your parental rights."

"Then we strike first," I said, watching the tail lights vanish into the fog. "Arthur, get me the complete financial audit of Whitaker Global's charitable foundations from six years ago. It's time to find out how much my mother paid Dr. Sterling and the county hospital to make Mara's medical records disappear."
