Chapter 10 - Dawn Over the Estate

Six months later.

The spring thaw had finally arrived in Chicago, replacing the bitter winter frost with vibrant green grass, blooming tulips, and a warm, golden sun that washed over the stone facade of the Vance estate.

The house felt different now. The heavy, oppressive gloom that had hung over the halls for four years had been scrubbed away, replaced by the sound of fresh paint, repaired architecture, and—most importantly—laughter.

In the grand garden behind the east wing, where the old sub-basement entrance had been permanently sealed and filled with fresh concrete and rose bushes, Clara stood wearing a light linen sundress. Her hair fell in soft waves around her shoulders, and the scars on her wrists were fading into pale, silver memories.

She held a paintbrush in her hand, adding the final strokes to a large canvas resting on an easel. It was a painting of the garden, bathed in golden morning light, with a small, carved wooden bird resting in the corner of the frame.

Julian walked up behind her, wrapping his arms gently around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.

“You’ve been standing out here for two hours,” Julian murmured, kissing her cheek. “You’re going to get sunburned.”

Clara smiled, leaning back against his chest, feeling the steady, strong heartbeat of the man who had fought through hell to find her.

“I like the sun, Julian,” she whispered, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck. “For four years, I forgot what it felt like on my skin.”

“You’ll never spend another day in the dark,” Julian promised, his voice thick with absolute devotion. “I locked away the past, Clara. Victoria was sentenced to thirty-five years without parole last week. The staff has been replaced with people we trust, and Vance Industries is running stronger than ever.”

Clara looked up into his eyes, tracing the sharp lines of his face that she had memorized during their years together and prayed over during her darkest hours.

“I know,” she said softly. “Because I’m finally home.”

Julian leaned down and kissed her—not with the desperate, frantic energy of the night they were reunited, but with the deep, enduring peace of two people who had survived the worst storm imaginable and emerged on the other side, unbroken and free.

Together, they turned to look out across the sunlit estate, watching the world wake up to a brilliant, unshadowed dawn.
