Chapter 9 - Victoria’s Final Gambit

In the holding facility downtown, Victoria Sterling sat in a stark, windowless interrogation room.
The designer suit she had worn yesterday was rumpled and stained. Her hair, usually coiffed to perfection, hung limply around her hollow, panicked face. The invincible socialite, the woman who had manipulated an entire corporate empire and held a human being hostage for four years, was gone.
The heavy steel door swung open.
Two armed bailiffs escorted a federal prosecutor into the room, followed by a court-appointed defense attorney who looked thoroughly exhausted.
“Ms. Sterling,” the prosecutor said, sitting down across the metal table and opening a thick manila folder. “We’ve completed the preliminary asset seizure. Your accounts in the Caymans, your properties in Zurich, your stock options in Vance Industries—they’ve all been frozen and transferred back into receivership. You are facing a minimum of twenty-five years without parole on charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment, grand larceny, and corporate fraud.”
Victoria stared at the table, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
“No,” she whispered, shaking her head frantically. “No, you don't understand. Julian... Julian wouldn't do this. He needs me! The board needs me! Without me, Vance Industries will collapse within a week!”
“Vance Industries posted record profits this morning after your removal,” the prosecutor replied flatly. “And Mr. Vance has made it very clear: there will be no plea deals. No leniency. You will spend the rest of your natural life behind bars.”
Panic, raw and animalistic, surged through Victoria. She slammed her hands onto the table and stood up, leaning across the metal barrier.
“You can’t do this to me! I am Victoria Sterling!” she shrieked, spittle flying from her lips. “I made him! When Clara disappeared, I was the one who held his hand! I was the one who kept him from falling apart! If I go down, I swear to God, I’ll take him with me! I have documents! I have secrets about the Dublin subsidiary that will destroy the entire Vance family legacy!”
The prosecutor didn't even blink. He calmly closed the manila folder, stood up, and signaled the bailiffs.
“Threatening a federal witness and attempting corporate extortion,” the prosecutor noted mildly. “Add another five years to the charge sheet. Have a nice afternoon, Ms. Sterling.”

As the heavy steel door slammed shut and the locks clicked into place, Victoria screamed—a high, piercing sound of absolute defeat that echoed down the empty concrete corridor.
She had played a high-stakes game of cruelty and manipulation, believing she was untouchable. But she had underestimated the depth of a husband's love, the resilience of a surviving spirit, and the unyielding weight of justice when it finally fell.
